Carlson and I wouldn't say it's that close. Shattenkirk is extremely sheltered.

give me shattenkirk, bigger offensive threat, not great defensively but no slouch either, havent seen enough of carlssons defensive game to say shattenkirk is definitely better however.

Because he plays 2nd pairing minutes with Jackman, and if we need a goal late, then we put him with Pietrangelo in offensive situations?

2nd pairing minutes but third pairing competition. Carlson goes up against the other team's top line.

So you're saying the other team is nice enough to put their third line on for the second lines minutes?

Sorry, if he's getting second line minutes than he's facing the other teams second line. You can't fault him for being behind one of the best defenseman in the league. Carlson would be getting what Shattenkirk gets if he was on St. Louis.

No, he faces 2nd pairing competition with Jackman, might want to check those stats again.

The only times Hitchcock deviates from the base pairings, and the order of those pairings is in late game situations when we are either defending a lead or need a goal, otherwise the pairings look like and play in this order:

Colaiacovo/Huskins-Pietrangelo
Jackman-Shattenkirk
Russell-Polak

He might not get minutes like Carlson, but he certainly doesn't get sheltered minutes.

you havent seen enough of carlson's(carlson...two s's is karlsson) game to judge him.
right? carlson has been the caps shutdown right defense since starting in the league. that should say enough.

offensively they both had the same even strenth points and we all know the caps offense under dale hunter was ultra conservative and against coaching when holding a lead. further the caps had dennis wideman and mike green ahead of him for power play time. as a rookie and on the shutdown pair carlson was 6th in the league in even strenth points.

food for thought.

Does that mean Polak primarily faces 3rd and 4th line competition? I'm not quite sure I follow...

Doesn't this poll already exist? I could have sworn I saw this same thing earlier.

Either way, I'm going with Carlson, I love Shatty, but Carlson just has a better all-around game.
