I continue to find myself unconvinced by anything Nick Kypreos says...ever.

I think Varnakov has finally struck a bit of a golden balance for the lines- finally. It took 10 games including the SS in August.

Like I've said earlier in this thread, I wasn't worried about the offensive production for Russia, the talent was always there. Now that he got them to buy into a defensive system, this team can do a lot.

But still 1 more period to go, let's hope Russia can remember what happened in Buffalo in 2011 or even against OHL. Gotta play RIGHT 1 more period.

How do you think Pens fans feel, especially considering the depth in the organization at the PMD position.

Guys fast as hell but was running around with his head cut off the first 4 games... It seems something has suddenly "clicked"

I think he finally came out of his KHL slump a bit. Wouldn't be surprised if he goes back to KHL and produces a little bit.

This is just one game. The WHL was much better last night, but the first two periods tonight is clearly the best hockey that Russia has played. Their sound defense is starting to turn pucks over and create more puck possession inside the WHL zone. Guys like Bogdan Yakimov, Sigarev and Koko are starting to show their skills. I know that Canada will put up a big fight in the 3rd. Fasten your seat belts.

Ye, I'm not sure what happened to WHL. I know Russia is playing better, but WHL defense is kind of absent. Looks like to me anyway.

Actually I don't really know what Pens fans think, maybe "expect the worst, hope for best" mentality with him. Just too high for someone so weak defensively, should've been a solid 14-19 pick IMO.

But they do have Harrington as well, who should be a very solid shutdown for Pouliot and Marrow should develop into a two-way defenseman that can actually play some defenseman.

Wish the Pens could have nabbed him in the draft, Kuhnhackl and him were great together in Windsor.

The WHL team is really missing Ryan Murray tonight

Russia seems to be controlling the puck on the cycle at will, and the puck is starting to pinball all around the Canadian net. Obviously, they need a wholesale change of strategy and tactics, but that's hard to put into play in between one period.

He's had a weak game. While I'd never say DP is a great defensive player, I have seen him play better than this.

Murray-Siemens combo was amazing last night, but Reinhart and Wotherspoon, though on separate lines tonight have looked really good.

Agreed in terms of he's a much smarter player than what we've seen defensively, but these turnovers by him never really surprise me.

Taking out 3 steady eadies in murray, siemens and pulock was a dumb move by hockey Canada.
Also disappointed with Rielly's play today.

Btw, I think if Kosov ever wanted to make the jump to NA- he looks ready physically.

His finishing and puck handling could use more work, and KHL is good for that, I think. But seeing him is like some 25 year old running around 18 year old kids.

Not worried about Pouliot. He's been much better this year for Portland than he has tonight. For comparison, Morrow looked terrible at the WJC camp last year -- I never put much stock into these types of games either way.

This 3rd period should play right into Rielly's strengths.

I've seen him since his rookie year, the kid needs a "Harrington" as a defensive partner to survive the NHL or you will hate him VERY fast.

I don't mind the talent that he has, and his upside is clearly there, but I feel like the org could have traded down a few picks and gotten an extra pick or two. The problem is the Penguins have Despres, Morrow, Dumoulin, Strait, Bortuzzo, Grant, Harrington, etc. they arguably have the most depth in the defensemen prospects in the NHL. Just stings knowing the org could use a solid forward prospect other than Bennett and had Grigorenko and Forsberg available. The org develops PMDs very well so the chances of turning one of the above into a winger+ in a trade is very possible given the Whitney-Kunitz, Gogo-Neal trades.
