Why is it that to be a female sportscaster you have to be pretty attractive. You'd never see the female equivalent of a Gord Miller or Bob Mackenzie getting an on air job.

Pandering

It essentially is rule #1 in tv. Pander. Pander to your audience, pander to your sponsors. Pander pander pander, and when that's done, pander some more!

Teresa Hergert wasn't attractive. But yeah, that's the only example I can think of.

Also, looks are more important in the anchor role than more functional jobs like play-by-play (Gord Miller) or reporting/opinion roles (Bob McKenzie).

thats a good way to put it. I was trying to suss that out and i think your right. general rule of tv seems to be the less you do the better you need to look.

Disagree. Cassie Campbell was clearly hired just because she was a hockey player and plenty of NFL coverage is done by average looking female reporters. There's definitely a bias towards attractive reporters but that's understandable when their job is to be on TV. If they're not going to be experts or retired pros, ex. Campbell, most male sports reporters, they need the entertainment factor, ex. attractive females, Onrait & O'Toole's comedy, etc.

Also, TV crews can make pretty much anyone look above average. I think most appear above average looking assumeIG hey are not ex pros or highly regarded industry voices. Same can be said of males.

Good for her. From what I understand she is well respected as an intelligent, hard worker and not just a face. This is a great opportunity for her and hope she does well.

Never enjoyed her work and turned the channel when she came on. She always seemed to try too hard with the nicknames and sports jargon.

Good for her career wise.

Agree. Tried a bit too hard to be 'cute' with sports jargon, imo. Does this open a spot for Sheri Forde when husband Duane becomes the bombers new Assistant GM?

I went to school with her. I still have a tape of me gobbling like a turkey during one of her sportscasts. She is very smart and motivated.

However with a very few exceptions, female sportscasters aren't as a whole on the same level as men *yet* and I think that is simply due to numbers and years that they have been in the field.

When someone like Sara Orlesky can be an NHL sideline reporter you know the talent pool is not that deep.

Didn't know they have sidelines in the NHL.

That's too bad for Winnipeg. I thought she was a cutie, very funny too. I always felt bad that she had to discuss sports in her wrap-ups with news anchors who had no clue. I was hoping she would get promoted to TSN. She had a lot more sports savvy and personality then a woman like Kate Beirness, I
think.

Good luck to her out in New England.

I can't say I remember having ever watched anything she's done, but I am Mr. Forgetful.

Apologies. That is the common name for what she does. Does rinkside work better for you?
