Love Ouellet... But if he makes it... It will be as a 7th Dmen...
I stand by my point that his overall game makes him Canada's 3rd best D-Man on the Team. I could agree that Morgan Rielly is making a strong case otherwise, but XO is better than Dumba, Reinhart, Ceci, Harrington all-around. Equal to Rielly (but I think is better RIGHT NOW).
How I see it:
Offense:
Murphy
Rielly
Dumba
Ouellet
Hamilton
Reinhart
Defense:
Hamilton
Murray
Harrington
Ouellet
Reinhart
Rielly
Dumba
In my statement, just to be clear, I wasn't talking about potential, although I see some Ryan Suter in XO, he has less potential than all the other D-mam excluding Harrington.
What? It was common knowledge among Q observers that Ouellet was the best D coming into this season...
Ouellet has all the tools but his decision making seems suspect from time to time. I think he will need time in the AHL.
He is the kind of D that can play 27-28 minutes a night (well, at the junior level) and will give you great hockey in all three zones, but will make a couple of mistakes/turnovers every game. I guess you just gotta live with it.

His upside isn't as big as many others, but your right that right now he's around the 3rd best defenseman. Even though I'm based because I like XO, there is definitely an argument there.

I personally think Reinhart is just as good as Rielly( if not better), and you could make an argument for Dumba who has shown great potential in the previous WJC, he was a beast.
I really like Ouellet's game but if I was pegging him in Canada's roster, he would be #7 d-man behind Murray, Hamilton, Reinhart, Rielly, Murphy, and Dumba. Just my take.

This year hes better offensively then Dumba but I wouldnt put him above Dougie Hamilton offensively. I agree hes definitely better then the 7th dman on the team this year, even if there is still a lockout.

To be honest I don't think Ouellet is better than most of these guys right now. He certainly isnt better than Hamilton offensively... no way. Defensively you might have a point.. I think he brings more to the table than a guy like Harrington.. Ouellet is pretty solid in all department of the game.. and Murphy certainly didn't impress anyone on Thursday night... I don't think Murphy makes it
I see it as this:
Murray-Hamilton
Reinhart-Dumba
Harrington-Ouellet
Reilly
I know, I know Murphy....
It's possible but I'm not sure I'd take him.
Ceci makes a strong case too... It's tough.
Switch Rielly with Dumba for sure. Rielly might be the best offensive one of that bunch, definitely better offensively then Dumba.
I think Murphy gets the seventh spot and is used for the PP but the guy is a liabiility in his own zone, I've been saying it all season/summer. Some will disagree but I think Rielly's play this year coupled with other strong 2 way players (Hamilton, Ouellet) who can play D and provide similar offense will possibly mean no Murphy in the line up that often
I havent seen Reinhart so how good is his defensive game? Is he on Murrays level in his own zone?
I can tell he isnt that great offensively compared to most of the other guys. I just see most people have him as a lock in their top 4 while he hasnt produced offense at all this year. I cant see 2 guys like Harrington and Reinhart who both are hard pressed offensively playing every game. I may be wrong though

Aren't you guys leaving out a half a dozen or so guys that should be in the conversation, like Pouliot, for example.
If both Rielly and Murray are on the team, Ouellet has virtually no chance of making the team.
I don't think either of those guys are Ouellet's competition. They're meant to play offensive roles. Ouellet is meant to play a defensive role. I bet you anything he'll play with Harrington on a shutdown pair.
The guys he's competing with are Murphy, Dumba, and Reinhart, IMO. Murphy would mean the team has no real shutdown pair, Dumba could possibly fill that role, and it's hard to say with Reinhart because he's never shown up when I've watched him. I think Ouellet is the happy medium amongst all of these guys.
and, no, Benoit Pouliot is way too old for the tourney. He would completely dominate, though.

I was referring to Derrick Pouliot, who was taken 8th overall by Pittsburgh in the last draft.
My guess is Reinhart will get the shutdown role and Ouellet will be competing for the 2nd pair duties and his competition will be Koekoek, Finn, Pouliot and Harrington. I think it will be tough to get a spot on the team, I like Ouellet, but it's going to be tough and I don't think he's much better or much worse than the other guys listed.

Derrick Pouliot, in case you're not kidding. But he's D.. sucks. Well maybe doesn't suck but it's no Reinhart or Ouellet-level.

I really wish Reinhart would have shown something at the Summit Series. I don't get a lot of chances to watch him.
I don't get how he's overrated... He's a good Dman with #2 upside. When someone compairs him to Suter they aren't saying he's going to be that good but they have a similar style.
