How many model rocket engines would it take to launch a real rocket into space?

With the holidays here, here's a good religious tie-in:

I love these path-type questions.

An interesting question - could we speed the earth up such that we wouldn't need to keep adding leap seconds to our calendar every so often?

That's my favourite.

They're really cool because they're extremely theoretically accurate, but still so absurd as to be completely hilarious. Just like science should be.

What if you strapped C4 to a boomerang? Could this be an effective weapon, or would it be as stupid as it sounds?

Aerodynamics aside, Iím curious what tactical advantage youíre expecting to gain by having the high explosive fly back at you if it misses the target.

Good stuff.

If humans put on artificial wings to fly, we might become Titan versions of the Icarus story—our wings could freeze, fall apart, and send us tumbling to our deaths.

Surprised that no one bumped the thread for this:

I guess there's only so much you can do when the answer is "can't happen".
I think, about the only thing he could have gone into more detail about would have been to assume zero friction between the goalie and the ice and that all energy was transferred from the puck into the goalie and then calculate how fast the goalie would be pushed back by a slapshot. The answer to that is fairly easy. If a goalie outweighs a puck by a factor of ~600 then the puck would push the goalie back at roughly 1/600th the speed it was going. So if the shot comes from the points at 110MPH the goalie would move back at roughly .18333 MPH or ~.269 feet per second. What that means is that if the goalie was standing at the top of the crease (6ft from the line) it would take roughly 22.3 seconds for the goalie to be pushed back to the line.

I suppose you could do similar calculation if you're assuming that all energy that the puck has is transferred into the goalie when they collide (instead of both suffering significant deformation) and then figure out how fast it would need to go to overcome friction. I believe that's what he did to arrive at his mach 2-8 number.

Also, when dealing with the relativistic baseball, something is happening that is utterly foreign to us. Naturally your brain doesn't think that a baseball, simply by moving really fast, can approximate a nuclear bomb and although the result of the puck isn't what our natural intuition would tell us, it's fairly simple to imagine a firecracker or small explosive hitting someone, we see it all the time in movies.

Not a what if, per se:

My first reaction is that this would really bad for the Stanley Cup Finals. Then, I realized that the ice quality would probably be pretty good. Maybe it's a wash.
