maybe someone in here can explain some algebra to me....

what are the rules to moving fractions to the other side of an equation EX:

if i have

C=5/9(F-32)

and it says make F the subject.
i know the answer is

F=9/5*C+32

but how did i get there. how did i invert the fraction to move it to the other side i can't remember for the life of me.

So is it C=5/(9(F-32)) or (5/9)(F-32)?

I assume it is the first since you are talking about inverting the fraction, and I think you do this

C(9(F-32))=5
C(9F-288)=5
9CF-C288=5
9F-288=5/C
9F=(5/C)+288
F=((5/C)/9)+32

Hmmm, I don't know how to change my "C" fraction to the one you got. I don't remember all those rules either, you should ask Saab, or someone good at math, however the fact I got 32 might mean that I have you on the right track, but you just need to fix that last fraction

Remember that fractions are essentially divisions. Also remember that in your equation, 5/9 (F-32) is all one term. The 9 is a denominator for the entire term.

C = 5(F-32)
______9
9C = 5 (F-32)
9C/5 = F - 32
F = 9C/5 +32

I think CH did a great job explaining it, but if you need more help, just let me know.

i think i get it but it's different from what you wrote. i redid yours. does that make sense?

i just had to follow the steps. i don't even know how crappy this math is i've been out of school for 8 years and need it for a job and am trying to get a hold on it again.

You don't need to factor 5 into (F-32). It's an unnecessary step.

What you did is actually the exact same as CH. The only difference is you multiplied your 5 into your bracket and then subtracted and divided by 5. CH divided by 5 before he multiplied into his bracket so that he would not need to divide by five after he brought his 32 over to the other side. I hope this makes sense. Both are correct, just slightly different.
