Is the Detroit/Colorado rivalry no more?

For fans of Detroit and Colorado would say that today you consider both teams to still have a riverly or does it no longer exist? The last time both teams played each other in the Playoffs was the 2008 Western Conference Semi-Finals which Detroit won 4-0. So what would it take to see the hate come back with both teams?

I think a rivalry should be between the players as much as it is between the fans. I think it's gone.

For the rivalry to ignite, Colorado has to start winning the NW division every year. It seems who ever does that gets a team from the Central to hate them.

Detroit has a river, but I don't think Denver has one. If Denver got a river, there might be something there.

You'd think the fans still don't like each other.

For instance, I'm a Leafs fan and I can't stand anything Detroit. Bring Detroit and Toronto in the same division again, please.

not for years now

to the point where at this point I don't even think bringing it back would be as simple as "re-igniting" it so much as completely starting from scratch

No I think Detroit has significantly more rivalry with SJ, CHI and Preds, and starting to build one with STL.

I agree it would be tough bring back and it isn't a rivalry anymore. But then again I am older and have never hated a team more than I hate the Leafs. I will always view them as the Wings number 1 rival. The teams in the west have come and gone the Avs certainly stayed the longest, I appreciated the hockey and the clear dislike. But it went away and there was nothing to keep Detroit interested in them. It was purely out of competition and a very ugly incident in the Lemieux hit on Draper. Even in 08 it didn't have near the same feel and seemed forced before Detroit blew a very banged up Avs team's doors off.

I would expect Avs fans to feel a little stronger for two reasons. The Wings really were their first rival and the team currently employs Bertuzzi, no love lost there with most Colorado fans.

There hasn't really been a big rivalry since the lockout. Avs faded and I think there is a decent chance Wings will start to fade when Avs improve now.

Both being top teams in the late 90s was a big part of the rivalry.

As a penguins fan I can honestly say that this rivalry brought some of the most memorable games i've ever witnessed.

And to this day this is still one of my favourite games of all-time.

I miss that rivalry.

Did you follow some hockey over the last 10 years ????

Both teams are more busy not to moved to the AHL talentwise.

I'd say the rivalry has been over for several years. While the Red Wings remained an elite team, including 3 Conference final appearances, 2 Cup finals and a cup win in the last 5 seasons, the Avs have been knocked out early, then in or slightly above the NHL basement. It's no longer a rivalry when one team remains significantly better. However, it could easily become one again.

I think the opposite, a good rivalry should come from fan hate more than anything. If it doesn't survive one team dominating, it was never much of a rivalry.

Haven't felt that rivalry since 2004.

Hopefully the colo/det rivalry can be renewed next season (whenever that may be) as they fight for the #8 playoff spot.

Rivalry is completely gone, hate to say it. Even find myself rooting for the Avs in some games the past couple of seasons. Ew.

That hasn't been a rivalry since 2002 or so. There's no hate between those two teams. Also, none of the guys around for the heart of that rivalry still play today.

Anaheim, Chicago, and Nashville are Detroit's rivals nowadays.

The Avs might not have a rivalry with Detroit or Vancouver but I still hate both of them.

Can't have a good rivalry if the players aren't into it. Usually requires a playoff series or two as well, something we've lacked as of late.

It's pretty obvious that the rivalry ended a long time ago. It was born into the '96 WCF and died out of the '02 WCF. One of the greatest, most authentic rivalries in sports history.
