OT - CFL Expansion Draft

Tentatively scheduled for December 2013; far away but meh, not much else to talk about

Who should Ottawa be targeting now? Which positions will need the most work?

What are likely areas of weakness for the fledgling franchise?

They should be scouting goaltenders...or maybe a striker...then focus on a first baseman...the last thing they should look for is a point guard.

Yeah, I'd go for Glenn. It will be a tough first few years, but I think they can ease the horribleness with a good QB.

I hope they don't pick me. I'm not very good and I don't want to embarrass myself in front of the home town crowd.

Wrong answer. Glen will be in his mid 30s. Reilly will be like 29 and in his prime.

They aren't going to be given the players to compete right away though

I'd take McPherson personally. The guy is starting material at QB but unfortunatly he's been stuck behind a HOFer in Montreal. I believe he can be a star in the CFL if given the chance to start.

He's a dual threat, he can beat you in the air with his cannon arm and can run like the wind.

Yeah, that's what I'm saying. Get a guy who can fill in for 6 years as a solid QB and by years 4, 5, and 6 hopefully you have a guy who can help you.

You don't take a guy who has 2 years left in his career.

Cleo Lemon at QB, Bart Andrus as coach and Tie Domi as kicker.

but seriously, Mcphearson deserves his shot, speaking of former Argos, Boyd will be out of Edm soon.

Well based upon everything I've heard and read from the OSEG, and commisioner Cohon himself, the team will be given every opportunity to compete for the playoffs as early as 2014. The expansion draft has been setup in a way that we do have a shot at some pretty decent players.

That said; we still are going to need a great gm and coach though to hit the ground running here..

Also.....thought I'd throw this vid into the thread

I can't see the Alouettes not protecting Macpherson. Calvillo, as great as he is, is a year or two away from retirement and after him, Macpherson is their plan B. That's why you have to look at teams that are carrying three quality QBs. Teams like Calgary might let Glenn free or protect him and Bo Levi Mitchell instead and let Tate go. Or a team like Winnipeg that has Buck Pierce, Joey Elliott and Alex Brink.

I'm not sure how it'll work with how many players each team can protect at each position but I have a feeling each team will get to save two QBs.

I am a huge football fan, and I love the CFL. I was a Renegades season ticket holder, and can't wait for 2014. (These people who chirp about the CFL, and worship the NFL game, tick me off. It's like hockey - plenty of room for all kinds of different leagues and styles, guys.)

What killed the Renegades last time was lousy Canadian talent. We always said that the Renegades import talent was comparable to the other clubs. Don't forget the Renegades had guys like Kerry Joseph, Josh Ranek, Kyries Hebert, etc. What the team lacked was solid and star Canadian players. Those last few Canadians on the Renegades rosters were cover-your-eyes awful.

Therefore, the biggest focus in the draft has to be getting Canadian help, offensive linemen particularly. A good scouting staff can find you imports to plug and play at receiver, linebacker, etc. Harder to find is a) Canadians, and b) a quarterback.

You only get to protect one QB. Depending on how Bo Levi Mitchell develops next year, there is a very big chance that Drew Tate could be left unprotected in the expansion draft.

That would probably be Ottawa's best bet for a starting QB if the guy doesn't go Buck Pierce and get injured again.

(This is assuming Glenn is the starting QB in one of Edmonton, Winnipeg and Reilly is the other)

Tate is the guy I see Ottawa getting too. Apparently Calgary is very high on Bo Levi (that rhymes!) and if Glenn helps them win the Grey Cup, they'd be hard pressed to get rid of the guy who saved their season for Captain Glass.

I say if Ottawa can get a guy like Tate and maybe pick up Brink from Winnipeg, they'll be OK.

Darkhorse RB - Chris Garrett of the Bombers. He tore it up last year before blowing his ankle out this year in the first game of the season. Bombers had Chad Simpson step up which makes him expendable.

No way that Calgary let Tate go, they always talk about him being the qb of the future.

As long as every player they select is living, then it should be considered a successful draft.
