Do you think if a player like Rielly signed in Europe with an AHL/NHL outclause they could just sign a contract with the leafs and then go to the ahl?
Basically..
1) Canadian CHL player gets drafted by NHL team - wants to go the AHL
2) Signs in Europe with AHL/NHL outclause
3) Signs deal with drafted team and leafs European team to go to the AHL
Regardless of the process, you'd run into the issue that Yakupov had. The CHL team wouldn't release the player and the IIHF wouldn't approve the transfer. Don't get me wrong, I like Rielly a lot, but he barely played last year. For his sake when the lockout ends (assuming this year), I hope the Leafs let him finish the year in Moose Jaw, hopefully play World Juniors, and then go from there.
