Awful decision, but on the bright side Kobe likes him so he likely won't be undermined. This could be absolutely ridiculous, either the Lakers will gel as a run and gun team or this is going to end horribly.

Maybe him and Nash rekindle some of the good times from the PHX?

No team speed and not many deep shooters, I don't know how that can happen. He will have to make major adjustments or roster moves will have to be made. The only speedy player we have is an inexperienced guard in Darius Morris who doesn't know if he's a point or shooting guard, with extremely wild ball-handling. He probably shouldn't even be playing.

I hope and expect that we will parlay a piece or two into more athletic players.

Phoenix Suns Fans are laughing right now.

I would rather have just given what Phil Jackson wanted instead.

Didn't read article, but I thought Jackson was going to make a decision today/Monday. If that's the case, Lakers shoulda waited on him first.

Either way, I like Nash/D'Ant back together.

Let's not kid ourselves, they wanted Phil Jackson to come back first. He didn't want to come back.

" We want Phil "

According to ESPN...

Quote:
Sources told ESPN that Jackson's triangle offense was seen as a benefit to Bryant and Pau Gasol, but not as conducive to the rest of the players on the roster -- namely point guard Steve Nash and center Dwight Howard. Another strike against the triangle was the fact that this Lakers team struggled mightily to pick up the similarly complicated Princeton-style offense being instituted by Brown.
A league source indicated late Sunday night that Jackson was "stunned" when the Lakers called to inform him they had chosen D'Antoni. He had been prepared to accept the job Monday if negotiations between his agent and the Lakers went well. Jackson's agent Todd Musberger had been scheduled to fly to Los Angeles on Monday.

Jackson and the Lakers had never spoken about a salary, the source said, "but he knew coaches don't make what he used to make anymore." Jackson, the source said, also never intended to miss any more road games than he had in his previous years with the Lakers.
"Phil would come back only to win and skipping games doesn't lead to winning," the source said.

They replaced one of the better defensive coaches in the game... for one of the better offensive coaches in the game. Alright then.

Seems like a nonsensical move. They sign a guy like D'Antoni to a four year deal even though they'll be lucky to keep their newly established core together for two years, and maybe it'll just be a one-year thing. So, their main concern would be trying to win now, which would suggest that Jackson would be the obvious choice in that regard. Only reason that D'Antoni makes sense would be if they were thinking about what'll happen after Kobe and Nash retire, in which case it defeats the purpose of putting them together in the first place.

Then again, I also thought that hiring Brown initially was a ridiculous move in the first place when it happened, as he leaned on LeBron to hide his deficiencies in major and obvious ways and that that kind of stuff wouldn't fly out in L.A., so the Lakers and I clearly aren't on the same page when it comes to hiring decisions.

They should trade for Bynum again. They now need a center that is willing to shoot 3s.

That was my first thought. Bench there in LA won't help D'Antoni at all.

How's Meeks been, he was pretty good 3 point player back with Philly.

Mike Brown was not a good defensive coach

I dont know where that came from... because he was an assistant coach in San Antonio ?

I'm not a fan of the hiring and I thought they should have brought Phil back, but to be honest, I'm not as pessimistic as most seem to be.

First, I think D'Antoni will do good things for the offense and I think his defensive deficiencies can be compensated. The Lakers have two former defensive player of the year (Artest and Howard) + a perenial all-NBA defensive team member (Kobe). Plus, they have two other guys with head coaching experience on the staff. If D'Antoni delegates the defense to them and works with the personnel he has on offense, it could work. Still not the best decision, but I think it COULD work.

I agree with you. I also believe that D'Antoni's defensive deficiencies is a bit over-exaggerated. How many good defenders did those Suns team have? They barely had any average defenders on those teams. Their center was Amare Stoudemire. He'll have three of the better defensive players in the league in Howard, Gasol, and Artest, and all three are decent to elite offensive players as well, not to mention Kobe.

Shawn Marion and Raja Bell were excellent defenders.

This should put a massive amount of pressure on Howard... it will be interesting to see how he handles it.

I mean, from an offensive stand point the Lakers should be excellent. D'Antoni should be able to get that team scoring quite well.

The problem will be on the defensive end. I dunno, D'Antoni's tactics haven't been successful in the playoffs.

It will be interesting to see. I also think MWP will need to step up, we will see if he can.

I'd be surprised if he makes it 4 months. He couldn't accomplish anything while he was here in Phoenix, he flopped in New York, and I am hoping he fails in LA now.
