Zika virus

NBR has been running series this week on the various companies and countries and what they're doing to diagnose and combat the disease.

Santa Clara county is relying on the "old standby" of mosquito fish to help with transmission reduction.

Things like this sometimes make me wish I had gone into Virological Biology instead of astro physics.

I have a few friends in this field, and the **** they work with is scary.
I have always had a huge desire to combat a disease like Borrelia (Lyme disease) since I have close family members who suffer from it, and there is so little study on it.

A friend of mine is working with class 6 viruses (Retroviruses) She tells me, that when working with stuff like that, you sometimes get paranoid.

It's good the general populace have no clue, how little it would take to bring down civilization as we know it.

Let's just hope, the bad guys never develope the means to create biological weapons of a big enough scale.

http://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/201...roof-uniforms/

South Korean Olympic team wearing long sleeve shirts and long pants for opening/closing ceremonies for Rio Olympics to help prevent exposure to mosquitoes/Zika virus. The uniforms are also coated with chemicals to keep mosquitoes away.

US, Great Britain and Australia are wearing shorts.

IOC prevents mosquito proof clothing for competition (unless you're an equestrian rider or similar whose outfit already has long sleeves/pants).

Hey it's the final bad guys plot of Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six, the Olympics are going to be used to spread an epidemic around the world!

I'm confused as to why this is a big deal.

Only seems to be an issue for women who are pregnant or going to become pregnant. And while it is a terrible disease, it hasn't been particularly widespread.

Now, there are plenty of reasons to protect yourself from mosquitoes, but I'm just not sure why this one's captured everyone's attention.

Same reason ebola was a story: ignorance and fear-mongering.
