Shinkaruk is awesome. So is Sam Reinhart!

Also, both tendies played excellent games.

Rielly has so many takeaways this year. He's really exceptional at stripping the puck from players his age

Kind of bitter sweet. I really wanted to see this game won in overtime.

Despite that, it has been to most entertaining subway series game so far this year.

Rielly was SO GOOD in tight, tonight. Whenever it seemed like they had him hemmed in, he squeeked out and made a smart play.

This kid is an absolute STUD. Does he play tomorrow night too?

Yes he does.

His skating and rushing skills will show up on the highlight reels, but perhaps the most impressive aspect of Rielly's game is his ability to pivot and spin in very close quarters to gain himself room and get out of trouble.

Agreed. IMO was the best defenseman for the WHL squad.

Dumba was really bad tonight. Just tried to do way too much.

I've only seen Griffin Reinhart a few times and Morgan a few times more... but I am so underwhelmed with Griffin. I wonder what made them favour Griffin over Dumba or Rielly? Small sample size, but I see so much more potential and Mo-Riles and Dumba.

Players who stood out favourably to me were...

Hunter Shinkuruk. First off, the kid looks like Phil Kessel ... but the comparison stops there, . He gets into the dirty areas, competes, has good hands and vision, and a good shot; got robbed a few times.

Morgan Rielly: The kid skates amazingly and is always looking to make things happen offensively. Dominate on the PP, and if they pair him with someone who has a shot on the PP like a Hamilton, Dumba, or Murphy, they'll have a damn good PP on the point.

Sam Reinhart: For the youngest guy on the team, the guy seemed to standout for me. Smart plays, good vision, great compete level. Had a nice penalty shot too.

Ryan Murray: I've seen a few more games with Murray, and everytime I watch him he always seems to be the smartest player on the ice, and he was again tonight. He just seems to make plays effortlessly and always makes the right play.

Laurent Brossoit: Probably the best player in the game. Huge stops and has made a case for himself with the canadian brass; esspecially after the showing he had for them in the summer challenge.

Really entertaining game to watch, hope tomorrows is even better.

I was surprised at how good Shinkaruk is.

He looked better than Yakupov IMO.

I totally agree. Yaks was underwhelming. Nail was on the perimeter a lot, avoiding hits, making turnovers. He had his moments though, but they were a few and far in between. You'd think a guy who scored 10 goals in 13 games in a men's league would be dominating a team of juniors.

Notes on Game 5

Nichuskin - Looks like a NHL hockey type player, should go in the top 7, probably higher. As I always say, my favorite comrade. Going to be a good one.

Pulock - Played a smart game, showed good ice vision and was a danger on the PP. Considering he was the only draft available D man with a regular shift, he didn't look out of place to his elders.

Shinkaruk - Energetic talent, as said before this is a 100% hockey player, a Parise like performance.

Rielly - Most noticable defenceman, styles make headlines and Morgan didn't dissapoint. Great skater and puck control, only crtique, needs to get points out of his offensive jaunts.

G Reinhart - A very efficient game, good first pass, calm, his game was all around solid.

Dumba - The 2nd most visable D man last night for Canada, lugs the puck effortlessly, played a solid game moving the puck. Only dissapointment is his offence not as noticable as in the Under 18 last year. Seems to have toned down his game.

Murray - Solid game, typical Ryan. Made no mistakes, nothing stood out, but that's his game. Valuable safe mins that will make him a valuable D man at the Worlds.

Siemens - Solid, safe game, stay at home D man.

S Reinhart - Creative young C, will be interesting watching him continue to develop.

McNeil - Looked good, good combo of skill and phyicality.

Nesterov - Liked his agressive game.

Shalunov - Noticed him.

Lazar - Perhaps the least noticable high profile draft eligible prospect.

Yakupov - Shut down again, credit the WHL D for this.

Overall thoughts, seeing comments about being dissapointment in defencemen not named Reilly.

Should remember guys, all 6 guys play different styles. For the type of games they all play, I was impressed by all of them. Wouldn't be disspointed if this was the 6 that we went to Russia with. To me they all played better than Ryan Murphy or most on the Q and O teams. Shouldn't be lost that the WHL shut out Russia, without them getting good scoring chances for much of the night.

The entire defence played well, all the guys did what they do best. I wouldn't be unhappy if any of these guys was on my roster.

Im liking Shinkaruk for a late top 10 pick if we fall to that range.

I like Yakupov and I am certainly not comparing him to Radulov, but scoring 10 goals in the KHL is not like scoring 10 goals in the NHL. Different league, different challenges. This is why I always say to my friends that are over enamoured with the "talented" russian player. Beware.

Right Ernie?
