Comparing Baseball to Hockey

Today was a big day for the Jays. A significant trade that told the league and fans that they want to win now. I consider myself a leafs fan first and foremost, but also follow the Jays and Baltimore Ravens. However, I'm the first to admit I am not a die hard Jays fan, when I first saw the deal I didn't know how to react because I couldn't value all the players in the deal like I can in hockey.

Example:

When someone says Joe Thornton, I know exactly his skill set and relative value to the Sharks.

This is something I can't do in baseball.

Credit to The Amazing Ralph for this post in the Jays thread.

Quote:
I think your analogy undervalues the talent the Jays gave up. Here is my assessment of the Equivalent offer from the Leafs (lol).

Leafs trade

Nikolai Kulemin - equivalent to Escobar without the attitude problem
Dave Steckel - equivalent to Jeff Mathis
Matt Finn - equivalent to Justin Nicolino
Joe Colborne - equivalent to Jake Marisnick
Cody Franson - equivalent to Henderson Alvarez
Nazem Kadri - equivalent to Adeiny Hechavarria

in return, they receive

Jamie Benn (equivalent to Johnson)
Loui Eriksson (equivalent to Reyes)
Brendan Morrow (equivalent to Buehrle)
Stephane Robidas (equivalent to John Buck)
Tom Wandell (equivalent to Emilio Bonifascio)
Anyone compare to pull big name ball players out of the MLB as well as the Jays and attempt to quantify them using equivalent hockey player value?

Example:

Bryce Harper = Ryan Nugent-Hopkins?

One thing I learned from this trade is Baseball players make way too much money.

This type of trade would never happen in hockey.

Lind is way better than komisarek...when Lind made the all star team he actually deserved it...he didn't just get voted in by a stupidly loyal fanbase, he actually had legit all star numbers

With the new TV money coming in, expect players to be making more and more money.

According to local news last night (CTV), the Vegas odds-makers had the Jays at 100-1 odds to win the World Series a couple of days ago. After the details of the trade became known they changed those odds to 15-1!!

hockey players are underpaid

and why wouldnt it happen? are you saying a blockbuster trade has never happened in hockey, or that the cap makes cool trades impossible?

happened in the NHL now

Lupul - Benn - Kessel
JVR - Grabovski - Eriksson
Kulemin - Bozak - Morrow
MacArthur - Connolly - Frattin

Robidas - Phaneuf
Gardiner - Gunnarsson
Liles - Franson

Unreal offence.

Brett Lawrie = Jake Gardiner, in terms of relative talent

(Yeah, I know Gardiner isn't a forward. It's hard to compare Baseball to Hockey)

Kulemin and Franson wouldn't be there they were part of the trade:

Eriksson - Benn - Kessel
Lupul - Grabovski - Van Riemsdyk
Morrow - Bozak - Frattin
Brown - McClement - Ashton

Can't handle.

It's funny because I might be understating the impact of Jose Reyes. When he is on his game, he is a top 5 shortstop in the league. While Eriksson is a good player, he is not even a top 10 winger imo.

brett lawrie is a proven commodity, gritty player, future potential all star

gardiner is a 2nd pairing D with several holes in his game

Gardiner is a proven commodity as well, he was the best rookie defenseman league-wide last season posting 30pts in 72gp and was named to the 11/12 All-Rookie Team. I don't care which way you look at it, in his rookie campaign he was 3rd in TOI/G among our defenseman, logged significant SHTOI/G and PPTOI/G and looked tremendous in doing so.

Very true.

Wingers I'd put above Eriksson:
1.) Ovechkin
2.) Kovalchuk
3.) Kessel
4.) Hossa
5.) St.Louis
6.) Parise
7.) D. Sedin
8.) Kane
9.) Hossa
10.) Gaborik

Arguable: Neal, Nash, Sharp, Vanek, Eberle

You gotta remember though, Eriksson was 4th among LW in scoring last season, coming off back-to-back-to-back 25G+-70pt seasons, and is a great defensive player and PKer. He is definitely a top forward in the NHL and would be a very significant piece to be traded especially when considering in this hypothetical situation he would be packaged with Jamie Benn!

Eriksson is one of the most underrated players in the league, a 70ish point LW (which LW is terrible hes probably top 5) while being absolutely solid defensively.

If you traded Kulemin he can't continue to play for your team.

Let's just say we weren't able to pry Landeskog (Stanton), but we got Stastny (Reyes), Duchene (Johnson) and O'Reilly (Buehrle) from them.
