Katie Strang is not long for ESPN -- she's way too good for that place.

I've just about given up hope at this point. Just call it already.

And if you don't know the reporter Katie Strang, she has the most up to date and inside info on the lockout than anyone out there. She really knows her stuff.
Before the lockout began, Boylan didn’t know how much time he devoted to watching the sport. Now, he’s wondering why he even has cable.

haha that made me laugh.

"I’d volunteer to do it for free," Boylan said in a telephone interview with ESPNNewYork.com. "I’d love to get this thing done."

"I’d love to take a crack at it, because it’s truly the game I love," he said. "And from a selfish standpoint, you’d really like to see them back on the ice."

So why hasn't this guy been hired yet? he loves the game, wants this to end, but also isn't ignorant to the fact that both sides see respect in forms of money. And from what he did with the nfl seems to be able to level with these guys in more real life manner. Not trying to fawn over the players or slurp the owners. Hopefully this is taken seriously.

It really bothers me that guys like Ference are playing overseas. He got us into this mess. He should be picketing outside of the Garden every damn day, not playing for a healthy pay in the Czech Elite League.

BINGO! one of my favorite players but that palace coup he and his buddies did a few years ago led to this. Put me down that if Paul Kelly was in charge I'd be watching Landeskog live tonight

a gun pointed at me could not change that opinion- he'd do a fair job and everyone would win; this is personal now on who or which camp wins.

Today was the day I predicted by and as of tomorrow they can just stay out all year- I'm cool going to 15 Providence games and a bunch of college

I'm not. I love hockey at the other levels too Dan but Bruins hockey in my house is an institution that has been taken away from us and I am getting very bitter..

Its now surpassed business decisions and clear thinking it now its one big pissing contest and that was my Fear with Fehr being involved. The parties involved have egos and reputations of hard negotiators and they are letting their reputations and egos run amuck.

I am siding with the fact there will be no NHL hockey this season and I will pissed. That being said I will attend more NCAA games and Providence games to make up for it but I will somehow get back at the NHL for not playing. Whether that be not renewing my season tickets or not buying NHL merchandise I will get them back in my own way for this disgrace of a lockout.

That's what I'm doing. I don't have season tix but I have no plans to go to a game this year if they play and I have stored all the gear I wear away and have even taken the NHL stuff off my den walls. I know it seems silly but it is the only way I really have to protest.

Its hard to just leave the sport
I did it with baseball in 94 though.
I was the biggest baseball fan. Wouldn't miss a socks game.
After they cancelled the ws though I haven't watched an mlb game or bought any mlb merch since. Just a personal beef I had.
First year couple months of the next season was tough. But after that you find other activities.

I would ultimately.love to see each fan walk out of the rink the first game these guys comeback. It would kill the players to play in an empty rink

Totally agree. I love hockey and I love the Bruins and it would be hard and I doubt I could miss games and not watch on TV. I enjoy bringing my kids to the games and enjoying watching them on TV. But it seems the only way I can voice my opinion is with my wallet. If the owners/players are taking some enjoyment from me they are paying in some fashion as stupid as it is. Whether that being I dont spend a dime on concessions or NHL Merchandise that day is coming.

Because walking a picket line is really going to help.

He - and Chara, and Bergeron, and Giroux, and Lupul, and every other NHL player - has a right to work where he can if he's LOCKED OUT. They are NOT on strike.

As for the "healthy pay," insurance costs (depending on cost and length of contract) negates much of what many players are making overseas.

For players with long-term deals, they might have more wiggle room in terms of being able to ease back into NHL game shape. They can afford, perhaps, to take more time to get back into a groove whenever that groove is required.

But if you're in the final year of your deal and trying to preserve an NHL future, you can't count on just stepping back into form.

Ference is entering the final year of his contract with the Bruins. He is 33 years old.

He recalls the difficulty those players who didn't play competitive hockey during the last lockout faced when the NHL returned in 2005-06. Ference needs to play and stay sharp and hope that whenever NHL hockey returns, he is ready to hit the ground, or ice, running -- ready to impress enough people that his NHL journey, one that began in 1999 with the Pittsburgh Penguins, can and should continue beyond the end of this contract...

To protect the final year of his deal, one that would pay him $1.4 million after taxes, Ference's insurance costs are $7,500 a month. Throw in equipment, including sticks he will bring with him to the Czech Republic, and everyday living costs and it's pretty much a wash financially.

At first I thought I would probably still pay for Game Centre but at this point I'm willing to sacrifice it even if a short season does happen because I am not giving a dime to the NHL.

I am upset that players have gone to Europe and are posting pics of themselves over there having a good time - if they gave a damn about the fans they would not be rubbing this in their faces.

I don't care as of now and am tuning out - been a fan since 1972 so it doesn't bode well for the NHL this time around.

You really don't think a union showing solidarity of 400-500 players picketing outside the NY NHL offices every day would help expedite things? They could create havoc down there.

So what.... about $60,000 over a full season in insurance costs? Ference must be wearing gold plated armor and going through a hell of a lot of hockey sticks overseas.

You would think that having to pay for their own insurance would open these guys' eyes to the costs incurred by their teams for items other than player salaries.

Guess that is expecting too much

It is what it is. Neither side is starving.

No sense in caring about it anymore than they do.

Well said. Ference, in addition to being a good player, is handsome and charasmatic. I wonder if so many people would be so forgiving of the guy if he looked like Lyle Odelein and had the charisma of Alexei Zhamnov.

I've got a 6 month old puppy and a very pretty girl gave me a Bruins collar, but I swore I wouldn't put it on the pup until the lockout is over, just out of principle.

Now, I just realized I've been wearing my Bruins hat just about every day...dawn breaks over Marblehead!

I'm not gonna wear it anymore, or any t-shirts either. A small token, but it's all I can do.

Obviously, it's not just insurance costs. Though a handful of players in the KHL (Ovechkin, Malkin, Kovalchuk) are making big bucks, there is no way guys like Ference are making close to their NHL salaries. Add in housing, transportation, and maintaining two households (Ference's family is still in Boston), and, as he said, he'll probably come out of it a bit in the red. To him, staying in game shape is worth it.
