Assumin there is no season, who do we get? I don't see anything big happening considering the new ownership and with other contracts to worry about. (Pietrangelo, Shattenkirk, Berglund, etc.)
I think I wouldn't mind seeing a Ryan Whitney signing if he'd stay healthy, but that of course is doubtful.
So yeah, we do have quite a lot of of contracts to deal with this coming summer. The fact this season is looking lost, it puts us in an awkward position with Stewart unless there are changes to the UFA eligibility rules. The deals for the 4 defensemen is probably going to add ~$6m to actual salary.
If, by some miracle, we were in a position to spend then Weiss and Šmíd wouldn't be bad options!
Smid gets resigned by Edmonton no doubt but Whitney is a player I'm interested in. A good number two with good offensive ability and isn't liable in the defensive end. Big body in the corners. Seems like a perfect fit for Petro.
Outside of McDonald, I really don't see too many UFAs the Blues would realistically have much interest in. Maybe Weiss, but I think IF he does hit free agency he'll likely get Backes type money. IMO, they should continue to focus on keeping our own players and possibly make a trade for a LHD(IF we don't already have that figured out). As mentioned, they should have plenty of checks to write with our RFAs alone.
