i liked Godard on the Pens. good fighter, actually scored a couple cool goals and i'll never forget him jumping off the bench to protect his goalie during the Pens-Isles brawl. If i had to have an enforcer i'd much rather have Godard than that waste of a roster spot MacIntyre...
Of all the (edit: should have said enforcers) who ever came through Pittsburgh in the last 25 years, he's the one who understood and executed the job best (Kristof Oliwa was the worst).
Very good read. Godard was a great fighter, if I wasn't on my mobile I would find some of his classic bouts to post. The lockout is probably going to be the end of a lot of players like him. Some might say that's a good thing but personally I respected what he brought and will miss him. Granted he was hardly playing lately anyways. Nice that he got his ring at least.

MacIntyre understands the job as well as Godard did; he's just soooooooooooooooooooooo much worse of a player. Godard was highly unlikely to lose you the game if you gave him a few shifts. I can say no such thing about MacIntyre, who is among the very worst "hockey players" I've ever seen at the NHL level.
Godard was an excellent enforcer, he knew his role and did it well. He was also one of the hardest punchers of his era.
Here are some great Godard fights.
Can you name any enforcers that have decent hockey skills?
Chris Neil and Deryk Engelland for example. I don't know if they are enforcers strictly speaking but they will fight anyone. Maybe they aren't called enforcers because they can actually play the game.
Loved him when he was a Flame. He was the only guy I could see that could even stand up to Boogaard, let alone win. Boogaard got a concussion in this fight I think.
Godard was my favourite enforcer for years and I was overjoyed when he became a Penguin. The guy was tough as hell, would protect any of his teammates, and did a hell of a job doing it. I too will never forget him racing off the bench to protect Brent Johnson during that Pens/Isles debacle. Best of all, in addition to being a tough-as-nails badass mother****er he was a great guy off the ice as well. I remember reading that he did a whole bunch of extra charity work while with the Pens.
Enjoy your retirement Eric you deserve it. Like others have said, hopefully he retired healthy.
