Just to add to that... Melky handled the situation pretty well (considering he got caught and tried to cover his tracks).

He withdrew his name from the batting title voluntarily, and didn't say anything about not being on the playoff roster.

He should be motivated to come back and prove people wrong, and also get that huge FA contract when he's 30 2 years from now.

This is a BOOM... not much bust scenario. At the very worst you're paying for a league average player an extra 4 mill.

The offseason has just begun you can't judge these other teams until everything is done then you still have to play the games.

Lind hit terrific June-Sept, he definitely still has *it*

keep him away from lefties and take the pressure off, and i hope it all works out for him/us

That would be AWESOME. Salary would very likely have to be moved out though.

Cabrera signing is pretty good. It's short-term, so relatively low risk. He's a pretty solid player. He's not as impactful as some of the other guys we picked up, but still a piece to the puzzle.

Shi Davidi ‏@ShiDavidi
#Jays have roughly $120m committed to 19 players (including Oliver, who may retire, and arb projections for Rasmus, Happ, Bonifacio) in '13

Be interesting to see how much further they could go. Wouldn't be surprised if the Melky did is slightly backloaded too.

doesn't hurt to have reyes, EE, and bautista as the dominican contingent

How many more could they get though? They're getting pretty full and up there in salary.

Agree with you. All about confidence for him.

Pretty clear he's not the all-star Adam Lind that we re-upped a few years ago. But against righties only, he's a good hitter.

Especially that he could theoretically hit as low as 7-8 in this lineup.

Time to move Raji Davis to the Reds who need a leadoff hitter. Get a few prospects back to replace the ones shipped out this past year. Gives the Reds a leadoff hitter and CF(well sorta haha) and 1 more year to wait for Billy Hamilton to reach the majors.
Davis probably stays as our 4th OF and pinch runner off the bench, allowing Gose to get a full-time starting gig in Buffalo.

Hmm link no longer works and the story has been taken down on the TSN site. Glitch or perhaps they got news from a bad source? As of right now, no mention of this on ESPN.

Update: Tweet by ESPN writer Buster Olney mentions the Cabrera deal with the Jays. Nothing yet posted on the actual ESPN US site yet and strange that it was up on the TSN.ca front page for 5 minutes and now disappeared?

I picture AA sitting in his office with a beer in his hand just answering calls from free agents...

AA; "Hello? Oh Josh Hamilton? Yeah we don't need you.... sorry bud..... Also I wouldn't sign in the AL.... Just sayin"

It's funny, if the trade with the Marlin's didn't happen I would be ecstatic about this signing, but now that we have money tied up in them, I'm worried about signing Cabrera for that amount....

Really though, this is awesome, if he's even close to what he did last year it works out great, otherwise we have our already existing LF platoon....and it's more depth too!

Isn't he a switch hitter too? Does any other team have switch hitters at both leadoff and #2 in the order?

Not much but changes many FA perspective of Toronto for now and in the future. For now, they could use that to get some depth (some veteran players would be willing to accept smaller roles for a chance to win a championship -- Yankees do a good job with that).

Im not sure that would make much significant difference. I also believe there have been a few studies indicating PEDs effectiveness might be overblown.

PEDs cant magically make a player a better hitter. Hand eye coordination, pitch recognition and other skills cant be taught by taking steroids. I think he will be somewhat close to what he was with the Royals. Maybe a little better.

Good guy to get for the #2 hole behind Reyes.
