Former NHLer sued for $1.6 million after delivering career-ending hit

The insurance company, Allianz Suisse Versicherungs-Gesellschaft, is seeking $1.6 million for an incident between Miller — then a member of HC Davos — and Andrew McKim, formerly of the Zurich Lions.

I can't remember, with regards to the Bertuzzi incident, but is this the kind of insurance clubs would take out for the players or is it in the CBA? Players take risks when they play, but how are they covered in the NHL for an injury like this? Or does one player have to sue the other?
