Not really.

Johnson and Staal were rated 1-2 by just about every scouting service.

It's always interesting to look back in hindsight and say they should have done this and that but in 2006 it was either Johnson or Staal.

It was either the 6'4" future #1 d-man in the Rob Blake mold or the 6'4" future #1 center with the same bloodlines as Eric Staal.

You couldn't really justify taking the smaller Jonathan Toews or softer and smaller Nicklas Backstrom at the time. They were great prospects very worthy of going 3 and 4. It's just that EJ and Staal were better draft prospects.

That's actually not a bad point. Schultz could turn out to be a top 10 talent from that 2008 draft. We ended up getting nothing from him. It'd make the loss a lot easier to deal with if we ended up with MacKinnon.

Homer vote for the Leafs. Columbus at least has been in the playoffs once in the last 7 years.

Washington. They finished in last place in 2003-04 before the lockout. They deserved the pick in 2005 but the NHL changed the rules so Pittsburgh could get Crosby. Washington ended up getting Pokulok.

Johnson, yes. Staal, no. Most if not every list I saw leading up to draft day had Toews as the 2nd rated player. I also saw some lists that had Backstrom ahead as well. I vaguely remember most people expecting Staal to end up going 4th.

It's actually 15, not 18('93; '02; '03; '04; '05; '07 they picked outside of the top-10). Still terrible, but not as terrible.

First, I would trade Kessel (hopefully they could get the a high 1st and 2nd round pick (perhaps the # 4 pick), then they would be drafting #4 AND #5 (provided there is no season this year). Drouin and Monohan would be 2 great players to build around. Then I would try to trade Lupul, Grabovski, Kulemin and Phaneuf for 1st round picks. That should ensure that they pick in the top 2 the next 2 years and hopefully draft Sam Reinhardt next year and Connor McDavid the year after.
You don't trade for positions, you trade for teams picks. You have to
guess who would be in those positions. Secondly are teams, who
are knowingly in rebuilds, going to trade their first rounders, for
established players. They'll say flat out no. The player they draft
could be better, than our established players. They won't roll the
dice on this.

You may be right.

Here is the Central Scouting Service's final 2006 ranking:
http://cdn.nhl.com/futures/cssrankin.../naskaters.pdf
Johnson then Staal

Here is Bob McKenzie's:
http://www.tsn.ca/draftcentre/feature/?id=3784
Johnson then Toews

Here is McKeen's:
http://mckeenshockey.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=548995
Johnson then Backstrom

Here is Inside College Hockey's:
http://www.insidecollegehockey.com/7..._ranks0436.htm
Johnson then Kessell

Pretty funny how each has a different #2 rated player.

As we said, though, Erik Johnson was pretty much the consensus #1 rated player in the draft. Having just traded Chris Pronger and losing Al MacInnis to retirement, it only made sense for the Blues to draft Johnson. They deserve no fault for passing on Toews.

It only validates their case as the most deserving of the #1 overall pick in 2013 that the consensus #1 rated player in 2006 has turned out to be quite a disappointment on his own and a major disappointment when compared to the #1 picks taken before and after him.

the Calgary Flames.

I looked back into the drafting history of every NHL club in their current locations and the Flames are one of 2 teams to never hold a top 5 pick. The other is Winnipeg who has only had 2 drafts and picked 7th and 9th in those drafts and had a a top 5 pick as Atlanta in 2009.

The Penguins finished with 58 points to Washington's 59 points, despite the Caps starting Matt Yeats when they played Pittsburgh. The Caps won the 2004 draft lottery and leap-frogged the Pens to select Alex Ovechkin. Loosen the tin foil hat, my friend.

Back on topic, the Pens, Oilers and Hawks don't 'deserve' the pick (no one does), but I'd love to see them get it if not just for the ****storm it'd create on these boards. Personally, I'd like to see Columbus end up with the pick and have something good happen to that franchise for a change.

The more I think about it, the more I'd like to see the Leafs get the 1st pick(aside from the Islanders, of course). That Leafs-Isles playoff series was epic, and I'd love for the rivalry to heat up once both teams are playoff contenders again. The Isles have had enough picks to build around to this point, but I think the Leafs need that one guy on offense to play with Kessell and be the face of the franchise. IMO, MacKinnon would be perfect.

Luckily for them, even if they don't get the 1st pick they should still be able to draft an elite center prospect as long as they end up in the top-6.

I think it's 18 when you count picks they traded for that ended up in the top 10(they got Toronto's pick in 97, 2 extra picks in 99(Montreal and LA) and Tampa's pick in 2000, while trading away their first in 2001 for Yashin).

Another the Islanders also traded up(1994 to get the better Lindros) to get into the top 10 once so that shouldn't count

There probably wonn't even be hockey so Burke will take his 3 balls and have a nice shot at a franchise centre.

And trading Kessel "For Picks" is stupid. When's the last time the Leafs have had a player like Kessel? Re-sign him.

I'd be cool with Mackinnon, Jones, Barkov, Monahan, Lindholm, or Drouin as compensation. So I'll be a happy camper if we get anywhere in the top 6 again. As close to the top is preferred but any of those 6 guys would be great replacements.
