Jon Heyman ‏@JonHeymanCBS
sources: Bay will receive his full salary from mets as part of deal

Jon Morosi ‏@jonmorosi
But by paying out Bay’s contract over several years, Mets gain near-term payroll flexibility.

I wonder if he can become good elsewhere. He was a great hitter before the Mets and it didn't work from the get go. Though his health is a concern.

The Mets do deserve credit for only signing him to a 4-year deal? It could've easily been a 7-year deal elsewhere.

by the way, the indians hired francona, who bay played for in boston. they have a gaping hole in left field (their left fielders put up a .215/.277/.321 line last year).

might be worth a shot.

maybe bay is one of the pieces?

How many players are the Mets now paying to stay away. It's like they double as an investment retirement firm.

Bobby Bonilla still has 23 years left of deferred payments.

The New York Mets placed Bonilla on unconditional waivers in 2000. He spent the 2000 season playing for the Atlanta Braves. The Mets agreed to pay out the remainder of Bonilla's contract by deferring the $5.9 million that he was due. The Mets will pay him 25 equal payments of $1,193,248.20 every July 1 from 2011 until 2035, assuming an annual interest rate of 8% during the period 20012035

We all know the Marlins/Jays trade was done so the Marlins could clear enough cap room to sign him.

Because they delayed the start of the payments until 2011, quite a bit of interest accumulated in the meanwhile and will continue to do so until he's fully paid off. As for why the Mets decided this was the best way to deal with Bonilla's contract, well that's beyond me.

IIRC, they used the freed up money to make the Mike Hampton trade. They cleared the whole 5.9 M for that season. They didn't care about the ramifications down the line since they felt they were a legit WS contender and were in total win now mode.

Could you see Bay get a minor league offer from the Jays?

I could see him latching on with someone on a short term deal in the AL as a DH. I think his playing the field days are over IMO.

He hit .234 with 26 HR over the last 3 seasons... who the hell wants that as a DH?!

I expect we'll see an article somewhat like this outlining Bay's buyout agreement in 5-10 years. It'll probably be something insane like a 30 year buyout with annual payments exceeding 3 million.
