Post your best lineup for next year

I think we've seen a few of these already but this would make for a good consolidated place to see ideas. No real need to ask for realism since the salary cap situation means there's little other option. It's a neat exercise.

Rules are:

1. Must come in under the cap. (duh)
2. Must have at least 22 roster players. Theoretically 20 is the minimum but realistically, we're not going into the season without at least 1 extra forward and 1 extra defenseman.
3. No low-balling cap hits, i.e, we aren't going to sign Corvo at league minimum. Not every player is going to get a raise from their prior contract but they're not going to take 30% of it either.
4. Provide a quick rationale/recap at the end.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Overall:
This team is built to make the playoffs now, at the slight expense of having a "sexier" lineup. The upshot of that is there are very few question marks.

Forwards:
-Buying out Ruutu's contract was tough, but gave me a lot more room to add depth all over the lineup.
-Traded McBain for Kennedy, a player Jordan Staal has chemistry with but seems on the outs with Pittsburgh. Given the Shero/Rutherford relationship I see this as a scenario that could very well pan out on draft weekend.
-Stalberg is a youngish player with good size and upside, but outside of one year where he scored 22-21-43 has never hit his offensive stride - keeping his price relatively low. This would be a classic JR acquisition along the lines of Jokinen and Tlusty.
-Torres provides badly-needed grit and veteran presence, and excels at agitation, keeps opponents from taking physical advantage of Skinner and rookie Monahan.
-The Dwyer-Nash combo seemed to be used quite a bit last year and had some success so keep them together on the fourth line. Of the AHL prospects I chose Welsh simply because he best fit that slot in the lineup as a physical/energy player with a little bit of scoring ability.

Defense:
-I would love Scuderi but his play in the postseason will likely inflate his asking price to $4.5m or more. Therefore I went with Leopold who does not have the same physical presence but is composed and solid on both ends of the ice.
-Likewise with Ference, who looks like another typical JR bargain-basement signing.
-Note that I also traded Harrison who was non-explicitly called out for his lack of physical play and was due a raise into the $1.5m neighborhood.

Goaltending:
-Peters cannot be the backup and Ellis seemed to reside in the doghouse. LaBarbera is a solid veteran and well-worth a modest raise.

JR said that the budget for next season is 60-61 million and that we won't be buying anybody out. So any "realistic" lineups should reflect that.

Can't see it. He's at $56.6 million now and has to sign 5 players, including a high draft pick at probably $1.5 million.

If he wants to stay on a 61 million budget, he'll have to clear some salary, period. He couldn't even bring back the exact same lineup as 2012 without exceeding 61 million.

He is going to clear salary, but not by buying anyone out. Buying someone out puts him over the budget. We are talking cash here, not cap management.

Something I'm not familiar with, are the Canes actually paying Jussi the 900k, or are they just retaing the cap hit?

Chances are this is what they'll work with as a base, give or take a player or two. 3M and change to spend on a defenseman barring any other moves. I don't hate it, but short of making a huge deal this is what we're probably looking at. Draft pick also figures in, obviously.

It's pretty much what they rolled this season with a few minor switches. LaRose turns into a bigger role for Bowman, McBain gets replaced by a 3M defenseman, Dalpe makes the team, Ruutu is healthy to begin the year.

Also consider that Dwyer/Bowman likely get bumped to the 4th and Westgarth out by the draft pick and Bergeron becomes the 7th defenseman by the FA defenseman.

It's just a base to begin with, but probably not far off from the finished product. There's just not that much money available if they're truly only spending to 61M.

I traded everyone we have that's good for draft picks, except for the Staals because we need a gimmick to get people to still come to the games (also I bought out Tlusty because there were no takers). We're guaranteed a top 2 draft pick with this lineup (depending on whether or not we win the lottery), and we likely will move to Quebec City after the 2014-2015 season.

In a stunning turn of events, the only defenseman on the roster that wasn't traded was McBain, and somehow he's still the worst defenseman in the lineup. I paired him with Anton to mitigate his terribadliness, so it should be fine. Darkhorse for team MVP is Joe Sova, as our expectations for him at the time of the Poni trade indicate that we thought he could be a serviceable bottom pairing defenseman, which is more than you can say about anyone else in the lineup.

Following the advice of many of my fellow posters on these boards, I traded Cam Ward, as he sucks and is much worse than Dan Ellis. Dan Ellis makes 60 saves a game with 82 consecutive shutouts (playing up to his potential) but the team loses 1-0 in a shootout every game. Peters starts the year as the backup but is cut when he's inexplicably found humping Muller's leg on the bench.

Top line: Our skill line, of course. Dwyer has some great compete level, and Bowman has an NHL caliber shot. EStaal is the weak link on the line, as his lack of leadership is glaring.

2nd line: Our big boys line, Westgarth and Blanchard tire defenses out by hitting them, opening up room for the first line, despite the fact that they're playing against a completely different pairing.

3rd line: Riley Nash is the future. Boychuk has already played for 3 NHL teams, which means he's a gritty veteran. Dalpe shows off his elite speed and shot and leads the team in posts hit at the end of the year with 1.

4th line: I'm gonna be honest, I've never heard of any of these players.

1st pairing: Our best defenseman with our worst defenseman. Never gets scored on all year.

2nd pairing: This worked in Charlotte last year, so, you know, we like our group.

3rd pairing: Sova wins team MVP, Krueger scores 11 own goals (in the shootout somehow) but is signed to a 4 year extension because, you know, we knew his dad.

Yeah, I hadn't heard anything about this 61 million number before now. If that is truly the case, then this will be the same exact team as last year with even more guys who should be in the AHL. The third line should be the fourth line and the fourth line should be in the ******* ECHL.

I sincerely hope it's not the case. I don't know why JR would even bother talking about fixing the defense or improving anything if it is.

Just disappointing that, after the big offseason last year, we likely won't be doing much this year.

Mostly because we can't afford to do much this year.

What the faulks is the most realistic in terms of what we are starting with. To get there mcbain goes at the draft for a pick so we don't take anyone back. Is a max rookie contract more than 1.5? I see people putting monahan in there for that. If we sign him to play this year he'll be at the max hit or very close to it.

Yeah, yakupov's hit is 3.7 but its probably right in terms of actual salary.

Even if we spent to the cap we would only have three million to spend anyway, which is right up jrs alley for his "Bryan Allen" type bargain bin acquisition or two. Could be another babs and melichar kind of summer.

Quote:
“We have been a budget team for a long time,” Rutherford acknowledged. “But we are now at the point where we’re going to be a lot closer to the cap than not. We’ll probably be at about $60, $61 million next year. Now we’re getting into that area. We know we had to do that with the change of divisions.
What's going to happen is we'll sign a #4-at-best defenseman. Which wouldn't be a problem if we had actual #1/#2/#3s. Looking at the free agents this player will almost certainly be left-handed, forcing someone in the Top 4 to play on their offside unless you wish to watch McBain/Murphy play in the top 4. To be honest I think Joe Corvo is a better hockey player than the player we will sign and is highly likely to be better than Ryan Murphy in the year 2013. I don't know how I've got to the point where I think it would be a good idea to sign Joe Corvo. Help.

The forward changes will come in the form of plugging in random AHL players. Look for Blanchard/Westgarth/Welsh/Sutter/Bowman/Nash to be the interchangeable parts on this rolling liability trainwreck from hell 4th line. They'll accomplish the all-important goal of throwing bodychecks at the other team's third pairing defensemen while starting 65% of their shifts in the offensive zone and scoring perhaps a combined 10 goals.

Due to the Jordan Staal/Jeff Skinner mismatch they will play on different lines, causing our nonexistent winger depth to be spread out even further. Four winger spots on lines 2A/2B and a combined two players who shouldn't be on the 4th line or AHL in Dwyer and Ruutu. The other spots will be filled by Zac Dalpe, who will fail once again and someone even worse than him. When Ruutu is hurt very bad things will happen and Staal's line will have to score 3 goals per game just to be able to lose in overtime when Kirk Muller puts one defenseman on the ice against the other team's top line.

Since Bowman/Welsh are already on the team thanks to their one-way contracts that were surely obtained at gunpoint, PK will be willing to give JR some leeway and let Peters and his 525k play in Charlotte. Ellis will be the back-up goalie, probably signed to a multi-year deal for no reason.

I think that about covers everything. Maybe JR will throw in a prospect to get rid of one of the one-way contracts that he handed to AHL players.
