Best Player of the Year

If there would be a 'Player of the Year' award for all competition (regular season, playoffs, best on best internations - e.g Canada Cup '87 is part of 1986/87*) in a year combined who would have been the choice each year?
It's more of a best player than 'most valuable player to his team' award, other criteria is up to everyone personally.

The 80s seem pretty easy other than that some years are very debatable.
Would be intersting to see someone continue it for previous years.

*The end of each season is when summer starts, so the World Cup of Hockey '04 is already part of 2004/05 for example.

My try:

1969/70: Bobby Orr
1970/71: Bobby Orr
1971/72: Bobby Orr
1972/73: Bobby Orr/Bobby Clarke/Phil Esposito
1973/74: Bernie Parent/Bobby Orr
1974/75: Bernie Parent/Bobby Orr
1975/76: Guy Lafleur/Bobby Clarke
1976/77: Guy Lafleur
1977/78: Guy Lafleur
1978/79: Guy Lafleur
1979/80: Wayne Gretzky
1980/81: Wayne Gretzky
1981/82: Wayne Gretzky
1982/83: Wayne Gretzky
1983/84: Wayne Gretzky
1984/85: Wayne Gretzky
1985/86: Wayne Gretzky
1986/87: Wayne Gretzky
1987/88: Wayne Gretzky
1988/89: Mario Lemieux
1989/90: Mark Messier
1990/91: Mario Lemieux
1991/92: Mario Lemieux
1992/93: Mario Lemieux
1993/94: Sergei Fedorov
1994/95: Eric Lindros

2006/07: Sidney Crosby
2007/08: Alexander Ovechkin
2008/09: Evgeni Malkin
2009/10: Sidney Crosby/Alexander Ovechkin
2010/11: Tim Thomas

I think this would make a great project for HOH.

Jonathan Quick would have to be 2011-12, right?

I'd go Martin Brodeur in 1996-97.

Does Price have a claim for 2013-2014?

#4 in Vezina
Gold Medal and Olympics MVP (did he win the actual mvp? Or just goalie mvp? Or are there multiple mvps? could never quite understand )
Lights out in playoffs - got injured, never himself lost.

Price was "Best Goaltender" but not on the All-Star Team (Lundqvist).

Selanne was MVP for being the leading scorer of the playoff round (just like Sakic in 2002).

I could see a case for Doughty this year though.

So was Selanne picked as MVP above Price? Or was Price not eligible for that category, as it's just scorers?

Or was it even "mvp" for Selanne, or more just a scoring title (like Art Ross)?

I guess what i'm asking is - is there an equivalent to a Hart/Conn Smythe in the olympics for MVP, and if so, who won it

Yeah, Quick would maybe be a better choice than Malkin. Amazing playoffs and 2nd in Vezina voting.

I've seen this done for the NBA on a different board.

Goalies are eligible - and they usually win MVP. Sakic and Selanne are the only skaters to win MVP in the five years NHL players have gone to the Olympics (Hasek, Niittymaki, and Miller won the other years). And it's certainly not an Art Ross award, because neither Selanne nor Sakic were the leading scorer of their tournaments while being named MVP.

None of the leading scorers of the Olympics have been named MVP in their respective year (1998: Selanne, 2002: Sundin, 2006: Selanne, 2010: Demitra, 2014: Kessel).

... very nicely done unknown. I appreciate your thought processes with the 3 way & 2 way ties in the early through mid-70's.
Illustrative of a keen understanding of the conditions & times, state of the game during that era which for many can be enigmatic.

I think positionally, it might be a fun project, but unknown33 basically hit the nail on the head for the last 40 years. We'd have a eight weeks of discussion where we're all saying, "Yep, Gretzky was the best."

Expanding it to Top 3 or Top 5 would be a possibility.

you could all submit your lists, and only hash out the years where there was room for debate, as indicated by your lists. Maybe draw the line at players receiving 75% or better of the vote automatically get that year.

(I know you were joking, but it would be a real time-waster for several years.)

Are there any other defencemen who could have a case?

e.g.
1990 - Ray Bourque
2010 - Duncan Keith
2014 - Drew Doughty

Chris Pronger in 2007, depending on how much you weigh his playoff contribution in relation to the time he missed from blocking a shot in the regular season. I imagine he would have been in the Hart discussion just as much as he was in the Conn Smythe discussion, while Crosby didn't factor into the playoffs much at all.

59 points in 66 games
1.87 ES GF/GA ratio
15 points in 19 playoff games

That's not bad.

Isn't the topic/subject misleading. It says "year", but you do talk season don't you? If it's season, the subject line should read "season".

Year for me goes from January 1 to December 31.

'NHL Hockey' year.

So far nobody had trouble, but you are right it might be misleading if you really try hard to make it a problem.

He has a pretty good case for 2000, too.

Shore in at least one of his Hart years, Kelly in 1954, and Harvey? Also if going back further from the creation of the NHL, Hod Stuart?

I really hate to admit this, but 2011 Chara if you hate Lidstrom's Norris that season, think Thomas was the product of his defense and workload, and really dock Timmy for up and down play against Montreal, Tampa, and letting in backbreaking goals in games 1 and 2 against Vancouver.

Crosby the last two years? With these playoffs he had? I will never agree.

I largely agree with the OP's choices, which are entirely reasonable, but there are a few things I would personally change/tweak, as in BOLD below:
