OT: CRTC kills Bell's purchase of Astral (UPD: Bell comes up with new deal)

RT @sladurantaye: No Astral for you: CRTC kills Bell’s $3.4-billion bid, says no benefit to Canadian consumers. Story imminent.

Steve Ladurantaye ‏@sladurantaye
Anglo sports fans rejoice: CRTC says Bell can’t convert TSN Radio to French.

Yes!

You can reject deals based on whats good for consumers? I had no idea. I don't mind though.

Bell gets ****ed over. Good. Seedy bunches of *****.

TSN Radio still needs to clean out some trash though, starting with that cheese-head Marinaro.

I'm happy about TSN radio staying but that doesn't mean anything for me during this ****ing lockout anyway, but the better news is Bell not owning everything.

Wow! So TSN690 still has a chance to end the jinx that began the moment they got the Habs' broadcast rights.

Yes, it's part of the anti-monopoly laws, which is why we have the CRTC, if I'm not mistaken.

Can we add those laws to these CBA negociations?

Well you'd need to ask a lawyer, but I don't think so.

The NHL isn't protected by any governing bodies that I know of. The act of broadcasting is however.

Edit: That's IT! We should make hockey a right in Canada.

Instead of making opaque judgements based on theoretical pricing conspiracies & economics, I wish CRTC would do something useful like end cable bundling, or allow more foreign competition into canada telcomm land, stuff that would be proven to lower costs for consumers.

About time the Govt makes the right decision..

Combining sports with a really important Anglo News station(CJAD) in Montreal was not right, seriously if the ALs-Impact conflicted, then Montreal would lose it's Rock Station for 3 hours to cover sports games. Anglo Montreal is already at it's minimum.

Bell can apply for another frequency or try to purchase the many French ones aval for an RDS station. Montreal should have both languages on Air always...

A lot of people in Ottawa are going to happy about what this should mean to TSN 690 as well. I hope Bell doesn't do anything stupid. Some good news amid all the NHL crap.

Meanwhile, we still have a monster like Quebecor who is still trying to be as dominant in our market. Deux poids, deux mesures.

Péladeau is rejoicing. I'm not.

Amen to this. When I moved in from Europe, it was like a 15 year ago flashback: limited internet (WTF?!), heavy prices for cable/internet/cell AND you pay incoming calls!
Now it just seems normal lol.

Quebecor has wrapped itself up in the fleur de lys so its gouging of Quebec consumers is a strategic asset.

Quebecor's services don't operate anywhere else other than Quebec. I live in Southern Ontario and very few people know what Videotron is, unless they are former quebecers.

They only own some newspapers/tv stations
