AHL Skills Competion: Sunday February 13th, 2005

Make sure you watch it tonight. In Ontario, it's delayed until 8:30 on Sportsnet, but if you get the other regions you can watch it live at 7:00.

Kyle Wellwood will be in the fastest skater and rapid fire competitions.

Here's the complete lineup.

Send a message via MSN to think-blue-
It'll be interesting to see how Welly does in the skater competition.

I was expecting him to be in the Puck Control Relay. Since he is a great stickhandler

Wellwood was decent in the fastest skater competition.

He was the second lowest skater. But he skated just as fast as Edmonton "speedster" Tony Salmelainen. And I don't hear too many people saying Niklas Kronwall is too slow for the NHL.

1. Tomas Plekanec 14.196
2. Jay Bouwmeester 14.535
3. Chuck Kobasew 14.553
4. Tony Salmelainen 14.762
5. Kyle Wellwood 14.776
6. Niklas Kronwall 15.000

I won't give away any more results in case people are still watching it on Sportsnet Ontario.

First .. being selected to participate makes a statement ..

Second big Jay Bouwmeester is a great skater and Welly's time 2/10 of a second around an arena .. Can the Human eye even detect 2/10ths of a second ??? Thats like blinking once or twice ..

As you said Salmelainen is a known speedster ... 14.762 verses 14.776 .. 14/100's of a second difference??

From his HF Profile

Tony Salmelainen - Talent Analysis - TIME : 14.762

In the summer of 2002, Salmelainen signed a contract with the Oilers and came to North America. His breathtaking speed made him a fan favourite, and he scored 14 goals in the regular season.
Salmelainen's most obvious skill is his speed, but he supplements it with an underrated shot.

Niklas Kronwall - Talent Analysis - TIME : 15.000

He is a great skater with good lateral movement and phenomenal speed.
He has great skating ability, hockey sense, passing skills, shot

Kyle Wellwood - Talent Analysis - TIME : 14.776

Wellwood does not have the speed necessary to avoid these hits.
His skating continues to be an area for improvement as does his strength

Is that really too slow ??

Ralph Intranuvo's record still stands. Will it ever be broken. Ralph is my favorite all time player not to make the NHL. I really think if he had of been given a fair shot at the NHL he would have been comparable to the likes of Steve Sullivan with the fiestyness of Theron Fleury.

You know Ralphie played 3 games for the Leafs in 1996-97 .. and he recored an assist .. So he will always be a part of the Leafs History .

As I pointed out in another thread, Peter Bondra won the NHL competition in 1999 with 14.640. Welly did it in 14.776.

Sure it can. But you have to hate the Leafs.

It was funny because as Salmelainen was crossing the finish line Peter Lobardious sounded like he was going to crap his pants as he was screaming "Let's look at the clock..."

It sounded like he was certainly expecting Salmelainen to have the best time. So you can't say that Salmelainen had a bad run or anything.

wellwood has amazing speed.

5th place out of 6 is incredible. i am convinced now that speed might be his best asset.

future nhler guaranteed. leafs first line center when the lockout ends.

If Wellwood's speed was as bad as some people like to pretend it is, he should still be skating the lap.

That is too funny my friend .. Here I am trying to blink fast and realized what I was doing wrong when I read your post because a Leaf Fan can't detect that ..

Salmelainen had to even put his hand down he was out of control he was going so fast .. Has anyone seen that move in the NHL in game conditions to balance and keep your speed. You see that move in the Olympics with speed skaters ..

I am glad this event happened because I believe this should put an end to that too slow comment .. and on top of that Welly is so quick in traffic .. He kind of Darts around and changes direction .. Straight out once around the rink in not even a Hockey play .. and even an end to end rush is just goal line to goal line once ..

Kyle Wellwood proves the naysayers stupid.

His skating isn't as bad as they say.

I think Wellwood's speed is deceptive. Most of the time I notice that he is going faster then he looks. I really hope the Leafs give him a fair shot at the NHL. So many small skilled players get overlooked and bumped down in the draft and the over all prospect depth chart. Guys like Fleury, St. Louis, Steve Sullivan, Oates, Brett Hull Recchi and Gilmour all got pushed back in the drafts because of their size for the most part. I only hope Wellwood can remotely some day turn out to be as good as any of these guys. Hard to believe Oates was undrafted .

Not only that but actual speed is his worst asset as far as skating goes. Welly has incredible acceleration (especially when he phas the puck on his stick ) and is ver proficient when turning. I'm just going to wait for the Leaf haters to start with their excuses. Somehow I think that they'll end up being gold material for a stand up act.

No need to wait my friend.

I've already heard that the clock must have malfunctioned for Wellwood's lap and that Salmelainen stumbled around a turn (which he didn't).

By your logic, if a player finished tied for 50th in league scoring, but every player ahead of him had only one or two more points) more point (i.e. he was only two points off of first), he'd be a mediocre scorer.

He did stumble a lil but wasn't that serious of a stumble... anyways Wellwood did put up a pretty good time.

Wellwood tried to pull a between the legs shot in the breakaway relay which would have been highlight matrial had it gone in.Cammaleri's would have been better though
