Will we ever see another max contract? (20% of cap)

Since the salary cap was instituted in 2005 there has been only one instance of a player receiving the maximum allowed salary of 20% of the cap for each year of the contract.

Simple question: assuming the max stays at 20% will we ever see another player receive the max? No limit on the # of years on the contract for this poll. Could be a one year deal or multi year deal but must be the max allowed salary of 20% of the current cap at time of signing.

Nope. In future years of the contract, the cap will likely go up, so it will be less than 20%.

That's not what I'm asking. The max is 20% of the cap at the time the contract is signed.

Oh. Then consider I voted 'yes' in the poll.

I am not sure but I am going to guess that it was Sundin right after the lockout. He made like ~7M when the cap was about 39M. That works out to about ~20%.

Has there actually been one? Sundin's salary history doesn't look like a max unless there were bonuses missing.

Chara came close but was $300K short in year one.

Yes, there has been one, and only one so far. It's not Sundin or Chara btw.

Jeremy Welsh? Although I think his cap hit actually exceeded it...

Nvm, the 20% is based on the player's salary and not cap hit, correct? In which case I think the answer is Shea Weber. Although technically he's 40k less then the max.

Yeah, I'm guessing it's not him because of that.

It was Brad Richards' contract signed in 2006 (39M cap, 7.8M/yr)

Shea Weber is $86.56m under having a max contract. He's being paid $110m over 14 years. A max contract would have been $196.56m over 14 years. The max salary being last years salary cap of $70.2m * 20% * 14 years = $196.56m

The cap was $44M in 2006-07, so it can't be that.

The closest was Lidstrom. 2005-06. $7.6M (2 years) @ $39M cap.

Edit: It is Richards, contract was signed with $39M cap still in place.

It was signed in May of 2006, so the $39M cap was still in effect.

Yeah I thought it might've been calculated by salary and not cap hit.

70.2M x 20% = 14.04M and he's being paid 14M per season now.
