American Graded Stakes Committee 2013 U.S. graded, listed stakes

Quote:
The American Graded Stakes Committee of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA) on Friday presented its listing of U.S. Graded and listed stakes for 2013, the results of its annual grading session conducted November 28 in Lexington, Kentucky.

The Committee reviewed 673 unrestricted U.S. stakes races with a purse of at least $75,000, and assigned graded status to 457 of them, eight fewer than were graded in 2012, and listed status to 201 races.

This is the first year the Committee is responsible for assigning listed status.

A total of five graded races were upgraded, including two new Grade 1 races and three new Grade 2 races; one new Grade 2 race and six new Grade 3 races were upgraded from listed status. Nine races which carried graded status in 2012 are no longer eligible for grading.

Get it done, Gulfstream...

Quote:
Gulfstream plans major expansion in pursuit of Breeders' Cup, year-round racing
HALLANDALE BEACH—
— The operators of Gulfstream Park intend to begin an ambitious expansion of the facility early next year with the aim of hosting year-round racing and returning the Breeders' Cup to South Florida.

The development plan being formulated by The Stronach Group includes two hotels facing the track, greatly enlarged grandstand seating, as well as a stand-alone casino and adjacent concert hall. A giant statue of Pegasus will adorn a 4D theater nearby in a park area.

But here's the most surprising aspect of a project that will cost hundreds of millions of dollars to complete: Public money is not part of the equation.

"We don't look for any handouts; we look to run the business ourselves. This is an opportunity for Mr. Stronach to leave a legacy to thoroughbred racing, a sport he absolutely, positively loves," Gulfstream President Tim Ritvo said of owner Frank Stronach.

While Ritvo declined to reveal the cost of the renovation, Stronach is already heavily invested in Gulfstream, which he purchased in 1999 and sank more than $170 million into rebuilding.
Quote:
The current complex has been described as the Taj Mahal of racing, but the scaled-down seating configuration has taken Gulfstream out of play for the prestigious Breeders' Cup, which it previously hosted three times. The planned upgrade could put the track back in the running for North America's premier racing event aside from the Triple Crown races at the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes.

Seating capacity would be expanded to more than 50,000, including extensive table-side restaurant viewing and luxury suites.

"Having been to South Florida in the past with three events at Gulfstream, we've had good experiences in the marketplace down there," said Bob Elliston, COO of the Breeders' Cup. "We're very interested to see what the folks at The Stronach Group have in mind for Gulfstream Park. We work with The Stronach Group at Santa Anita. We like doing business with people who know what they're doing around the race track."

Great Work!
Can't complement you enough.

On the points.
The system certainly diminishes any accomplishments as a 2yr old.
It also lumps the Breeder Cup Juvenile in with some very minor races???

Thank you. There was some heated talk when it was announced a while ago. Wayne Lukas was a strong opponent. The writer from the Louisville newspaper had a column a few weeks ago which quoted Lukas:

Quote:
“It’s simply a system that has no regard for 2-year-old racing and is flawed because at no time did anybody ask a person who has put up $50,000 to run in the Kentucky Derby, or a trainer that trained one, a rider that rode one or an owner that owned one for their opinion,” he said. “… It de-emphasizes the 2-year-old program. I think there are going to be some startling results when you get into the spring races. I think some very good horses are going to be excluded from the Derby.”
http://blogs.courier-journal.com/rac...akes-saturday/

Churchill Downs defended themselves by trying to play up the distance and giving merit to the later races.

Another from the same writer:

Quote:
Churchill Downs says it made the change to ensure that the horses in the best form and most suited for the Derby's grueling 11/4 miles make the field. The idea is to reward those doing well in the 11/8-mile prep races in late March and April — those winners will get 100 points — instead of those making a lot of money in sprint or grass races or those who win a big race at 2 but do not carry over their form to their 3-year-old season.

^ According to at least one source, it could be nose candy:

http://www.independent.ie/sport/hors...s-3317585.html

Quote:
One of the biggest names in world racing, Dettori tested positive for a banned substance, believed to be cocaine, at a meeting at Longchamp in Paris in September.

It is alleged that officials were "tipped off" that he had been taking drugs and that Dettori's legal team said the failed drugs test was not for a performance-enhancing substance.

The three-time British champion jockey said the indiscretion came as he feared for his future, having slipped down racing's pecking order.

"I'm ashamed and embarrassed," Dettori said. "It was one night of madness with friends.

"I dropped my guard when I was at my weakest. I was in a dark place. I was very low, my job was going down the drain.

"When I woke up the next morning I regretted it but it was already too late. I will regret it for the rest of my life."
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Back to an earlier discussion, it appears the Louisiana Derby will be adding festivities similar to the Preakness with infield frivolity and amusement. According to the Kentucky Derby Prep slate, the La. Derby is the equal to the Florida Derby in terms of importance. We'll see if the horses entered into the La. Derby are the Fla's equal. Maybe there's a 2013 version of Grindstone out there.

Pletcher likely will send Shanghai Bobby to two races at Gulfstream, though that is not certain, in the Holy Bull (January 26) and the Florida Derby (March 30).

In a Gulfstream-Calder debate:

Quote:
Gulfstream has racing when many of the country’s top horses, jockeys and trainers are in South Florida for the winter.

It has what Ritvo calls a top brand identity for fans who bet at other tracks, at Las Vegas sports books and through Internet and telephone services.

Gulfstream also has a fan base that appears younger and more upscale than at Calder. Calder does what Marshall calls “the hard and heavy lifting, for Florida racing.”

“We race during the summer rainy season,” he said. “We are a developmental track for 2-year-olds that are a big part of Florida racing.”

Calder and Gulfstream have different systems of reporting, handle, thus making a direct comparison difficult.

Calder’s handle fell in three of the four years between 2008 and 2011, according to Churchill Downs Inc. financial reports.

Yeah - last race was in '05. Wonder why he's going back, can't be for the money since he's had a steady acting gig and has been on HRTV for some time.

Yeah gotta be tough being as involved as he is in the sport just sitting idly by, especially since he retired due to health issues. Hope he can hold up for a good run.

^ The competitive nature still flickers. Sometimes, despite the successes, they want more. "I thought, 'Man, this is going to be a storybook finish...' " It is still a good story.

Here is what he said a couple of years ago about Point Given, among the biggest "what ifs..." ever.

Quote:
“Since 2001, he’s probably the best horse never to win the Triple Crown. You move on, but I’m still haunted by his loss in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I). For that pure feeling of confidence, the only horse I rode after him that gave me that same feel was Rock Hard Ten. Not a day goes by when I don’t think about his Kentucky Derby (in which he finished fifth). I was very hard on myself. He got a little tough on me when I tried to tuck him into position. Just recently, I watched the replay of that race for the first time, and you know what, the ride wasn’t that bad. When you have the best horse in the race you don’t want to get caught down inside and give the trainer or owner a reason to blame me. So I kept him in position in the clear on the outside. He’d had an infection in one of his back feet that week. On a deep track it didn’t bother him. The track had been deep for training that week, but then on Derby Day I set a track record with an allowance horse named Love At Noon and I told (trainer) Bob (Baffert) we were in trouble because the track was hard."

Here is what he said a couple of years ago about Point Given, among the biggest "what ifs..." ever.

[QUOTE]“Since 2001, he’s probably the best horse never to win the Triple Crown.
Since 2001.
But if you go further back, this horse IMO is the best horse (better than Point Given) never to win the Triple Crown.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Frac Daddy may have worked his way into the Grade 3, $400,000 Holy Bull Stakes on Saturday at Gulfstream Park with an effortless work here Monday, in which he went five furlongs in 1:01.31, then was caught by Daily Racing Form going out six furlongs in 1:13.95 and seven furlongs in 1:27.46.

The Holy Bull, at 1 1/16 miles, is expected to be topped by the unbeaten Shanghai Bobby, who Saturday night was named the Eclipse Award-winning 2-year-old colt of 2012. Frac Daddy is eligible to a first-level allowance race at 1 1/8 miles on the undercard Saturday, but trainer Ken McPeek said he was “leaning toward running in the Holy Bull” immediately after watching the work. Entries for Saturday’s card are taken Wednesday

Trying to re-open the East Coast vs. West Coast discussion? Easy Goer-Sunday Silence was a great rivalry, coastal and furious.

Smarty Jones should have won the Triple Crown but the pace got to him and he was gassed. Too bad, because that would have been a story for the ages. He wasn't a fantastic horse such as Spectacular Bid, but that was a fun ride for the connections.

No, not really.
What's fair is fair.
Sunday Silence had the quick acceleration that Easy Goer lacked, and used it to his advantage. Although poor judgement in the Preakness by Pat Day cost Easy Goer IMO.
But I'll always believe Easy Goer was the more talented horse. That was my point.
He had the ability to set a track record in the one turn Gotham mile, yet in typical McGaughey style, his speed was taken away from him as the races lengthened.

And I couldn't agree with you more about Smarty Jones.
Thank Jerry Bailey and a uncertain ride by Elliot in the Belmont to rob Smarty Jones.

The amusing thing about that clip was Dave Johnson saying "And down the stretch" not once but twice.

I was being sarcastic about the coastal rivalry, those were fun times especially when coupled with Affirmed vs. Alydar. Pat Day can never escape that baggage.

I was never hooked on Funny Cide but out of curiosity how do you judge Santos' ride in slop of the Belmont?

That's easy.
Empire Maker was the better horse. In fact Funny Cide was 3rd best.
The last thing you want in the slop is to introduce something new to a horse. Santos kept Funny Cide's face clean, and got away with easy fractions of 1:13 & 1:38. He wasn't good enough.

^ The brilliance and fortitude of Borel shined with SuperSaver because of track conditions. The messy ugliness favored the rail that day and more than any other race in recent memory, changed all earlier predictions because it played to Borel's strength. It set up a marvelous day for Calvin but more so Pletcher.

It really does need to be re-lived:

Here's a preview with likely entrants for the Holy Bull.

http://sportschatplace.com/horseraci...takes-preview/

Quote:
Saturday, January 26th, 2012: Gulfstream Park – The Grade 3 $400,000 Holy Bull Stakes.

Shanghai Bobby – He’s at the head of the class coming off an undefeated campaign in his rookie season for Todd Pletcher. Ridden by Rosie Napravnik in all five starts, this guy answered the bell at 5 different distances on 4 different tracks. In graded stakes, he dusted a respectable G2 field in the Hopeful at Saratoga including one of this race’s main rivals. He then stretched out to a mile in the G1 Champagne and handed it to Goldencents who has gone on to flatter him ever since. At the Breeders’ Cup, he locked up his Eclipse Award with a hard fought win, but his stock seemed to drop all the same. Maybe the distance got to him at Santa Anita, but maybe it was the cross-country trip. He’ll get his chance to prove his doubters wrong against a strong field. With all the talk that he’s at the end of his rope, it will be very interesting to see how he is bet, or not bet for that matter, as strictly the one to beat.

Frac Daddy – Trained by Ken McPeek and ridden by David Cohen in his last two starts, this guy is a maiden winner that may opt for an Allowance/Optional Claimer earlier in the day. To be fair, his last race was a strong runner-up showing in the G2 Kentucky Jockey Club to a strong colt in Uncaptured. McPeek is reportedly leaning towards the big race though, and some early chatter suggests he could be a wise guy type. Unless I see something I missed in the next few days, I will pass. I did not find that G2 at Churchill to be visually impressive and this is much deeper water. This lightly raced youngster absolutely has the right to improve and he reportedly put in a big time workout on Monday morning.

It really does need to be re-lived:

Calvin won the race for himself right out of the gate when he cut off the 3 horses inside of him, securing the rail.
You get a good view from the overhead showing Super Saver never getting any mud at him until the moment he split horses turning for home.
I hate the mud.
I thought Looking At Lucky could have been a good one.
