Yes, Phaneuf's value had dropped, but he was still only 2 years removed from being a Norris runner-up and was still only 25 years-old.

In fact, most of the guys who went to Calgary's value had also dropped significantly. Stajan, Hagman, were struggling badly. White was the only one playing well.
The trade happened at the end of January. Stajan had 5-7-12 in 15 games that January. That's not struggling; it's pace for 27-38-65 over a full season. Hagman had 4-3-7, pace for 22-16-38. That's their expected paces. They were only "struggling" if you are a Leaf fan who expects them to be scoring PPG.

Why are you only using 1 month though for a pace throughout the season?

Most people chimed in "Kessel&Schenn?" when rumours of Phaneuf to Toronto were out there the day of the trade.

The fact is, Stajan had 1 nice year getting a lot of minutes on a team with no Centre depth.

Anothe puzzling part to the trade was when it was officially announced, Sutter claimed it gave him "Cap flexibility". Calgary took back as much salary as they gave the Leafs back. And then Sutter horribly overpaid Stajan to re-sign him.

Stajan was a big part of the trade for Calgary, but Burke was going to let him go as a UFa for nothing. He had no plans of keeping him.

Joe Pavelski. I might say Vlasic because average fans have no idea who he is, but IMO he was our best player last year.

Before he left this year I would've said Brad Stuart for the Wings. He was very solid and I think his loss this year will be very noticeable.

For Minnesota, Kyle Brodziak and Jared Spurgeon.

Brodziak is one of the best 3rd line centers in the league who had to play long stints in our 1st line last year and didn't look bad at all. Hell, he made Nick Johnson (feel free to ask "who?") look good.

Spurgeon is a bit like the original Mini Cooper. You wouldn't believe that something so tiny works so well.

Spare the dick jokes, please.

Probably Andy Greene or Dainius Zubrus. Though I think Ponikarovsky was for the short time he was here. Travis Zajac of course too!

Kessel? Top five scorer? Lets count. In no particular order. These scorers should be above kessel.

Gaborik
Stamkos
Neal
Malkin
Ovechkin
Kovalchuck
D.Sedin

That's more than 4 skaters. So kessel should not be top five.

Pretty sure he meant top 5 in points last year.

W Niklas Hagman, 20+ goal, 40 point winger.

F Jamal Mayers.

For Phaneuf, Keith Aulie, and Fredrik Sjotrom.

Calgary dumping White for Babchuk and Hagman for nothing doesn't make the trade worse, and using Stajan on the third line because he's the only center they have who can play any kind of defense; he saw some time on the first line last year and looked pretty solid, and may end up as the first (or second, or third) line center if play resumes anytime soon.
The fact that your trying to justify the trade when every Calgary fan hated and still do hate the deal, or how Sutter subsequently got fired soon after or the fact that GM's were calling him an idiot for not advertising his availabilty becaus they would have easily topped that package should suggest your way off.

I'd say Grossmann. Granted it was a small sample size last year but he stepped into the top 4 nicely and formed a great pairing with Coburn. I'm pumped that we extended him.

Vlasic and Pavelski. Vlasic is a legit #2 defenseman who's only 25 years old despite playing the NHL for 6 years after being drafted in the 2nd round and having played top defensive minutes every damn year he's been hear. He's easily top-10 defensively in the league, but no, he's apparently been supplanted by the likes of Girardi and McDonagh and Gorges and Alzner. (Cue their fans coming in to complain). But really, Vlasic plays an absolutely flawless defensive game and the past year he added a real mean-streak to his game. His only real flaws are lack of elite offensive instincts and a wounded-butterfly of a shot.

And Pavelski, of course. Most on HF are convinced that Couture is better, where that's not true at all. Typical younger=better. Couture has better hands and perhaps better offensive instincts, but Pavelski is on a different level defensively, takes a beating in front of the net, is one of the best faceoff men in the league, etc. He is on the Bergeron, Kesler, Backes level of defensive forwards, but no one will give him the credit he deserves.

HM to Patrick Marleau for being a legit top-line forward when many consider him a cap dump and to Andrew Desjardins who is everything anyone could ever want in a 4th line center.

This angry response is a good example of Kessel hate
