I was lucky enough to get to attend the game. Brought my nephews and one of their peewee teammates - it gave them a picture of the old Minnesota franchise and players they never would have seen otherwise. The players did seem to have a blast playing together again and the fans loved it. You've got to remember how much the team was embraced in Minnesota, even though the last two owners so messed things up, the team was lost and moved. Three or four years after the team left for Dallas, one of the newspapers polled Twin Cities fans what their favorite local major league team was - Vikings, Twins, Timberwolves. 5 or 6% of the fans still answered "North Stars," even though the team didn't even exist any more. The game was a blast for old Stars fans like me - I attended games as a kid and worked at the old Met one season, so lots of great memories. Great to see the Minnesota alum win Saturday, too. Who did the '91 NS alumni play when you reffed? And who won? It was a great reunion for the 37,000 who turned out Saturday.
saw clips of that game earlier this evening. sure warmed the heart seeing those North
Stars jerseys and tell ya what?... some of those guys could still seriously play huh?
They didn't announce stars of the game, but as a goalie, Killion, you'd appreciate that the consensus 1st star among the fans had to be Don Beaupre, who stoned the Hawks on shot after shot until the game was out of reach and he let in a couple late, meaningless goals. Meloche was pretty acrobatic at times, too, letting in only one 5 on 5 goal (there was a penalty shot, too). Those two were the goalies who backstopped our run to the Cup finals in '81 - native Minnesotan Jon Casey, who did the same in our '91 Cup finals run, played out on D instead of in goal, but protecting the goal must be in a netminder's blood because he sure hung back close to the net whenever he was out there! Fun to watch, recognizable styles in the play of many of the guys from the old days. From a couple hundred feet away in the stands, it was enough like a regular game that it took you back; a little slower, sure, and without the hitting, but like you said, great to see the North Stars jerseys in a game again.
