Goalies with spotty track records, although he still has starters potential, do not return top notch prospects like Merril. He's a good bet to be a top 4 defenseman, Neuvirth is not going to return that. I'd say Neuvirths current value is a 2nd round pick.

It's not that nothing will be done - it'll just be hard to gauge what moves to make this early on.
When it gets closer to the end of Marty & Hedberg's contracts, it'll be a lot easier to tell what types of moves need to be made goalie-wise.

This might be a deal to keep on pause and revisit later on (assuming their values live up to each other) - but, once hockey starts back up, Neuvirth would be sitting around doing a lot of nothing in New Jersey.

I don't know if the Caps would want Hedberg, but he signed a 2 year deal with a NTC so he could be with his family that he just moved up from Atlanta. I'm not sure how problematic that would be or how realistic it would be to move him.

I will just say this - Neuvirth's value is higher than Varlamov's a year ago, because A) He hasn't been injured nearly as much, B) He won't just go to the KHL.

Still not worth a team's top prospect.

No, doing nothing for the next two years is probably a bad idea, but it's hard to know right now what needs to be done. It depends on how well Marty and Moose hold up, and how well the current goalie prospects develop.

If, over the next two years, someone is clearly stepping up to be ready when Marty retires, Lou need not do anything. But if the goalie prospects look more like busts, then Lou needs to do something. The key point is that we won't know which is the case until closer to the end of Marty's current contract.

Luckily for us Devils fans, Lou isn't nearly as crazy as Sherman.

I very much disagree with this. Neuvirth is coming off a poor season, that hurts his value. Besides that he's also somewhat short for a goalie. But hey you never know. Neuvirth certainly has a respectable track record for the most part.

And even more luckily, you probably won't finish a year (if there's one) outside of the playoffs.
All we need now is to find another Sherman...

I would try Jay Feaster. Kiprusoff is nearing the end, and Feaster has been known to make strange decisions in the past.

Varlamov's value was derived from his potential and talent, which is an order of magnitude higher than Neuvirth's. KHL didn't factor into Varlamov's value since he agreed to sign before the trade.

Teams aren't gonna trade more than a very late 1st for Neuvirth since goalies of comparable quality aren't that hard to find. Bishop/Bobrovsky is a closer comparison.

I'd still be content with Volchenkov back. Imagine him mentoring Orlov on how to crush people with extreme prejudice. Volchenkov-Orlov would murder half the league.

Good thing New Jersey doesn't like this deal. They don't have a 3rd to trade. Maybe Urbom + 2nd for Neuvrith?

I'm not saying value is totally off but we don't want Neuvirth

That's a lot better, but there's no urgency to add Neuvirth.

The value is better, but it's still an unnecessary trade.

i doubt the caps are interested in trading neuvirth. holtby has established yet. his poor season was largely a result of being a young goalies as a backup. he went from a guy that has always been a #1 from junior on out, to watching vokoun. i'd bet as a starter he'd be pretty strong.

lets not forget what his lifetime record in the playoffs is as a hockey player. undefeated in junior and undefeated in the ahl in a total of four seasons. he is 1 and 1 in the nhl.

Rather have him than a pick that turns out to be Filip Forsberg? Hm.

Merrill has played in 19 games since the conclusion of the 2010-2011 NCAA season.

Character issues? Check.

Injury problem? Check.

He's missing invaluable development at this stage in his career. He has talent, but a ******** of question marks that seriously give question to his future.

That's why there's no chance that he'll be traded in a near future.

Please dont tell me he is injury prone. He's had one injury soo far, except it was a severe one. I fully agree with the Character issues, but if he gets past that he has the potential to become a Ryan Suter like Top Pairing Dman.

I always love when a guy has one major injury and is somehow therefor "injury prone"

the guy cracked his ****ing vertibrae. its not like he is missing time with a pulled hammy or something

just silly

and we aren't trading Merrill for anything less than a potential top 6 forward.

I'm a student at Michigan, so I see Merrill a lot and I love the guy, and I'd love to have him in the Caps' system, but I think his potential is being vastly overrated here. I expect him to be a solid second pairing guy who can fill in on the top pairing if needed, but not full time, and not on a contending team. He's certainly never going to reach Suter's level, I'd bet good money on that.
