Johnson just seems to be the safer bet at this point. The other players haven't had many NHL games under their belts.

The Wings combo AINEC. Smith will be better than Johnson. Nyquist and the 3rd are a bonus.

They said Patrik Stefan would be an NHL superstar too... Nothing's guaranteed.

Of course not, and certainly Johnson is safer, but I think Smith will be a far better player and well worth the risk.

Judging by you're vCash, you've made a few bad calls on things you thought were worth the risk before

My feelings as well.

Short term (2012-13) Smith and Nyquist are cheaper and will probably contribute more to a team. Long term their combined value is much greater. The 3rd would presumably be in the 2013 draft, potentially allowing a team to package it and move up into the late first round to catch a falling player from this highly touted draft.

Nyquist, Smith and the 3rd round pick. Johnson, to me, is a bust.

Only on HF will prospects and a late round pick be worth more then a top pairing Dman.

Hi usage stats indicate that he was effectively a 2nd pairing dman for Colorado last season, and prior to that (when teams tried to use him as a full-on top pairing dman) he was incredibly unimpressive. From my limited viewings of him he's looked like he has the brain of Phaneuf with less of the physical tools; I wouldn't call him a top pairing defenceman.

Far too many people use stats on this site. Stats don't tell everything, Stats don't tell us that our coach is a moron who didn't even know how to use him properly. Exactly the point that you can't evaluate EJ is you've barely seen him play so how can you possibly give a legitimate assessment of him? You realize he's only 24? It takes defensemen a long time (usually) to figure their game out, I have no problem in waiting for him to turn into a solid top pairing guy, yes he probably won't live up to his draft hype, but that's perfectly fine because he still has plenty of room to grow and the fact that wings fans think a prospect and smith is worth him is hilarious. There really isn't a piece from Detroit that I would take for EJ, they're on the decline.

He posted this to see if other people agreed EJ was worth more than that package. Which it would seem they do, thankfully.

How is this even a question? Not even remotely close to a tough choice
