Dogs paralyzed by spine damage are able to walk again following pioneering treatment
This technique was used on rats previously but here they used it on dogs that had paralysis from accidents and back problems i.e. the dachshund in the article had a slipped disc. By taking special cells in the lining of the dog's nose, growing them in a laboratory and injecting it in the site of the spinal cord injury the dogs were able to regain control of their limb function and coordination.
Professor Geoffrey Raisman, chairman of neural regeneration at University College London, said: ‘This is not a cure for spinal cord injury in humans. But this is the most encouraging advance for some years and a significant step on the road towards it.
