Apparently the Cubs were in on Chavez before he signed with the D-backs. 1 YR / 3M, come on, you have got to be kidding me! This had to be a location / warm weather thing because it makes no sense not to give him more than that. Thrid is looking like it is going to be a black hole again unless we can make a trade.

3 year deal for a middle reliever? Pass

Valbuena has been good in winter ball. He's going to be given a shot as the starter again I would imagine.

Stole this from another forum:

You’ll have to link to my second hand account here on what he said. I like Kaplan but I know he sensationalizes. Not sure if he would say this in Chicago but on his weekly call in on local Des Moines station KXNO he really dropped a bomb on the former Cubs brass.

The story he told was at the first meeting of all the Cubs main branches in front of the Ricketts family (marketing, sales, etc.). Theo was last to speak. When he started one of the Ricketts got a phone call and excused themselves from the meeting. Theo stopped them and said something like, “No, you have to sit down and listen, your phone call can wait.” I thought to myself pretty ballsy by Theo.

Theo then began to tell the Ricketts Board that after studying the Cubs players and prospects top to bottom that “This is the worst organization in all of baseball.” Kaplan said he went on and talked about this needing so much fixing that not to expect anything in the next few years and he needed a commitment that they were behind his team to put together a winner; no quick fixes.

I had not heard this story told like this, maybe others had. It was very interesting and you can read into it what you wish. You can listen to the 12/5 hour one pod cast here: http://www.kxno.com/cc-common/podcas...=MattandMiller if you want to hear the entire Kaplan interview

Good, I agree with Theo, the whole organization was a ****ing joke and an embarrassment.

I don't think it is that much at all for what Grilli brings. Who cares about the 3M, I don't, not my money. We'd have a stacked bullpen and frankly, it is worth the 3M just to give Sveum a fair shake and properly evaluate him. Furthermore, didn't we give 4M a year over 3 years to Bob Howry like 10 years ago? How is 3M a year now too much?

Bowden / whoever
Russell
Camp
Grilli
Marmol
Fujikawa

That's a very good bullpen.

Right, and the Howry contract was a disaster at the end. If this was a 82 win team looking to build its bullpen for a playoff run, then fine. But middle relievers are highly volatile from year to year, especially as they age. I'd be fine with 2 and a team option 3rd year.

The Cubs had the second choice in the 2012 Rule 5 Draft, and chose Hector Rondon, a right-handed pitcher, off the Cleveland Indians' Triple-A roster.

Looks like a good pick, the guy has excellent control, 91-93 MPH fastball, has been a starter throughout the minors, has the age and experience to potentially stick but has had some bad injuries in recent years, mostly with his elbow.

Solid pick... I remember way back in my dynasty fantasy leagues when he was a highly regarded prospect.

What exactly are these complications he has had with his TJ surgery? Good risk for sure, especially with how bad we need pitching.

It will be interesting to see if he can throw like he used to or not this spring. He used to bring gas.

Ah, gotcha. When I read complications, almost made it sound like something went wrong with the surgery itself. If that's the case, then he should only need additional rest post-surgery to get right. Pretty excited about this pick, even if it has the chance for him to turn into another Angel Guzman.

It's not a career ending injury anymore, and doesn't scare me away from pitchers, at least not if they've only had it once.

Shoulder injuries, however, now those are still career killers.

We lost Starling Peralta to the D-backs though. Still, the guy hasn't pitched above A-ball. I can't see him sticking with a team like the D-backs, but he does have the stuff to do it.

Grilli denies re-upping with Pittsburgh. Still a chance.

The market on Bourn just got smaller again as the Phillies picked up Revere from the Twins. The way it is going, he might not get that huge deal he wanted. This could work out great for the Cubs. Still, it will probably take what Upton got, 5YRS / 75M. Like I said before though, if we can get him to come down to 4 years and around 65M-70M, it's something to consider. He'd make a big difference.

I liked Stewart, great defense and the occasional homer. However, we will need another guy that can play third as well, one that can hit better. They will probably go with Valbuena but combined that is pretty awful offensive production.

I still can't believe they couldn't get Chavez, what a steal of a contract for Arizona.

It'll be Valbuena and Stewart. There just aren't a lot of big hitting 3rd basemen anymore. There aren't even 15 guys with a wRC+ over 100

Chavez lives in Arizona. He turned down several million more from the Yankees.

Cubs manager Dale Sveum got shot today by Robin Yountt...I think it was because of Brewers/Cubs rivalry and Yount thought of Sveum as a traitor. wow..

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/mlb-big-league-stew/dale-sveum--shot-robin-yount-during-recent-015427977--mlb.html

Or it was an accident while on a quail hunt...not sure.
