Hearing Canucks have agreed to terms on one year, $700 K pro-rated deal with d-man Cam Barker. I like that signing.

To wit: the Oilers paid Barker $2.5M to be a top 4 defenceman. Van will pay him $700K to be a 7-8 defenceman. Ok. I'm moving on now

seems lebrun cant admit it was a bad signing also smid/gilbert/whitney/petry/schultz all played above him last yr

Lebruns right, this is an okay signing for the Canucks. Throw him in the AHL if it doesn't work out. No big deal...

Barker didn't play as a top 4 defenseman, but that doesn't mean that wasn't the intent when they signed him.

He signed on with Dallas' AHL affiliate for half a season, and was not renewed.

This is a terrible signing for the Canucks.

Ya, but if he doesn't play well for the Canucks in the extremely limited role he'll have then they can throw back down to the AHL.

Hah, LeBrun must have been bombarded by Oilers fans after his earlier tweet.

Speaking of tweets I just saw one which suggested that Iginla has a groin strain already as do Booth and Hamhuis on the Canucks. There are going to be players going down with those left and right this season.

Ahh I came here to muse about this.
If that's true about Hamhuis and Booth the nucks are already in trouble.
A nagging injury like a groin strain is not good for players with a 48 game season on the line - no time to rehab and recover properly.
Couple that with Kesler recovering and making it known through his agent that he will not return to the line up until he's comfortable doing so ....

We might see a few more wins against the NW than we're used to.

All around the league you can hear the collective creaking of hundreds of aging, rusty joints fresh from their armcahirs... hauling their ***** into camps.

I agree... I'm betting the IR is chock full on every team by the end of January.

I don't know where this logic is coming from. The hockey product may be piss poor but it's not like all these guys have been sitting on their ass waiting for a deal to come. If they weren't already playing most guys were probably still sticking to a regular training schedule. It's kinda detrimental to career success.

I thought that Mirtle was supposed to be a saavy hockey guy?

James Mirtle
@mirtle 1h I imagine Kessel could easily get $7.5-million a season on a long-term deal. But does an extension like that work for Toronto this July?

7.5 for Kessel? Yikes. I wouldn't pay him anymore than 6 per. And that largely depends on what happens this year.

Here was his response to me after I laughed at his proposed 7.5 number.

Quote:
Look at the contracts for Heatley, Lecavalier, Parise, Nash, Vanek
Uuuh, the jury is still out on Parise but outside of Nash those are all crippling, horrible contracts. I guess that Mirtle doesn't have any confidence in general managers being um, frugal moving forward.

Why are they talking about Kessel now? As it stands today there is quite the list of guys, Vanek, Heatley, Thornton, Malkin, Gomez, Gaborik, Marleau, sisters etc...

Seems a bit premature, no?

More wisdom and Kessel love from Mirtle.

Kessel's on cusp of going to UFA as one of top eight goal scorers in last four years. He'll be well paid.

Should have kept that Seguin pick, Leafers. His contract is going to be a steal for the Bruins provided that he can stay healthy.

Lubomir Visnovsky is going be a good test to see if the KHL will follow through with the agreement to honor NHL contracts.
If they allow him to play I would hope the NHL goes to the IIHF, and they have the guts to do something.

Figured this was the best place to ask this question:

I just got into the Yahoo Fantasy Hockey pools as usually I just got together with a group of guys and we would draft at the beginning of the season and let it ride. I wanted a bit of a change so I joined one some guys at work were doing on Yahoo.

I have a couple questions regarding it to those that are familiar with it.

First, what does it mean by % owned?

Second, I wasn't able to make my darft until round 12 so I pre-ranked my players and I had a pretty decent team auto-drafted to me but when I joined the draft I didn't get any goalies. So the goalie crop was pretty thin at the time so I ended up picking up Holtby and Bernier.

My thought with Bernier was that hopefully a team would get anxious and make a move for him and give him some time. But I realize in the course of this pool especially on a shortened season I'm pretty much dead in the water if one of my goalies only plays once every 6 or 7 games.

So now to my question I checked the remaining available goalies and I figure these are best options for a pick up until Bernier does something or maybe I just eventually drop him if he remains the Kings back-up all season, but who would you pick up between:

Lindback
Markstrom(I have him on my radar because I think this could be the year he takes over as a #1 in the NHL)
Reimer

Let me know your thoughts.
