Let's wait until the 12th. Get the results from the trade thread. Go from there.

In the two day meantime, I guess we can figure out division names since there has been discussion about that (I personally could not care less if we're not naming one the Dean Youngblood Division in honor of Rob Lowe's character in the movie Youngblood)
When were we ever ''prepared'' for the draft order in the past?

We had a general idea of when it would be released in every draft I was in before this one.

Now that the dust has settled, would anyone actually be interested in choosing their draft positions?

The idea was actually VI's originally a couple of years ago - PM someone (probably me) a list of your top 5 preferred draft positions and I'd try to get you as close to what you wanted as possible.

If 2 GMs pick the same position (which obviously would be the case for the more popular spots like 1st overall), I'd use a randomizer to determine the winner, then move on to the 2nd choice for the loser(s).

If a GM can't get one of his top 5 spots, he gets a randomly selected one.

Or would you guys want to wait and see whether we can make trades before deciding?

I would be all for this...you may not get your top choice, but you will probably at least get in the area you want.

Rick Jeanneret Division
Dink Carroll Division
Red Fisher Division
James Creighton Division

Scott Beckenbaugh division? He's not historical, is that an issue?

Nix Gary Bettman and Don Cherry. I appreciate why they are important, but the last thing we want is a guy a significant number of posters hate.
I don't see how a referee, linesman or play-by-play guy is even close to as worthy of division naming rights as the freaking father of hockey...

I agree.

But I also don't care that much.

I got support from another GM for this idea via PM, so we'll put it to a vote (via a quick poll) after the results of the trade vote are released.

Ok, then on the serious note, how about Gabe Desjardins Division? It's not like divisions should be named only after dinosaurs.

My suggestion was going to be: 4 divisions named after Gretzky, Orr, Lemieux and Howe...that way no one could draft them...then I figured out that we picked 3rd and thought it was a stupid idea...

If I didnt like a Mt. Rushmore of hockey history so much I'd say that "BehindTheNet" is deserving for sure! Changing what we know about the game every day!

As it is even though some folks might not like Bettman I'm sure a couple older folks still probably have grudges against Ziegler. Celebrating the builders of the real league is a great thing for the "ATD".

Desjardins may end up being influential enough, but it's too early in his career to tell. At least the dinosaurs have a legacy that can be evaluated and honoured.

Jim Hendy and Ron Andrews (a pair of dinosaurs) are better candidates among stats guys.

Agreed. I think they're all the same plus I think pre-draft trading of all picks will be an option anyways.

I don't like the idea. I always thought dealing with the spot you're dealt to the best of your ability is a part of the challenge.

Have we decided that the draft positions were invalid? If so, I wouldn't be against your idea.

You do have a point. I'm really on the fence on that one. We really need more opinion of GM's.

If trading is a legitimate part of draft strategy, then I don't see why picking your slot shouldn't be, as well. I think it allows GMs to set their macro plans up as they see fit. I'd have loved to have had this option as a GM when I was active, and I know exactly which spots I would ask for.

It's a good idea...no reason not to give it a try.

First, we'll see who wins the trade vote. I think a lot more GMs will want to pick their draft positions if they know they can't trade once the draft starts.

If you don't like a proposal, you can vote against it. Any proposal that has gotten the support of multiple GMs has been put to a vote, and this one is no different.
