I agree with the above post, except I would offer Jones a significant pay cut. I like Jones and I dont think he's currently overpaid, but I see his future role on the team drastically reduced.

I agree with this but Whitney would only be offered around a 1 year deal, 2 years max. I wouldn't object to them re-signing Hordichuk either.

Habby kicked to the street
Petrell keep—he is the prefect 4th liner and does a lot of little things
Jones and Hordichcuk will be tough calls
Gagner, MPS and Lander keep
Whitney could be a tough call.
They need to keep Smid

What kind of paycut do you think he'd take? His cap hit is only 4M right now which isn't too extreme.
Depending on CBA and the new cap ceiling and floor it would really depend. Hard to say. I think he's worth 4M as it is, but only if he's playing - and he's even said that he hasn't lived up to his pay check being on the IR so much.
I like Hordichuk. I don't think we have anyone to replace him, so I'd re-sign him.
Smid long-term, Gagner & Whitney short term
Let Petrell, Khabibulin & Peckham go.
I'd re-sign MPS & Lander.
Not sure what to do with Jones.
We won't have a capable replacement for Whitney next season unless its a UFA signing or a trade.

I think it's a fair list but I'd keep Peckham and Petrell without hesitation. At worst these players get waived while providing competition in training camp and being possible depth options later in the year. Petrell isn't essential so no big deal but Peckham is a bad idea to let go of, as young defenseman take time. Wille Mitchell and Rob Scuderi the rock defenseman for the Cup champ Kings never made the NHL untill they were into their mid 20's. Guys who can fight and help a PK can be useful especially when they bring a willingness to be physical like Peckham. Even if he only ever becomes mediocre at evens his PK and enforcing abilities give him the possibility of being an NHL asset. Matt Greene is a good example of a player we let go of far too soon (in fairness Visnovsky was a terrific talent they moved him for), and Peckham has a chance to be that kind of player to go with his enforcing talents.
Also Whitney won't resign for less than 3 i would think so i'd probably just offer him a redo on the year and give him 4 million for 1 year. If he somehow recovered it would be awful to see him walk. If somehow Edmonton could get a ful year of a healthy Whitney the defense would be an outstanding group IMO.
I think Ryan Smyth is done due to the lockout and without him in the line up how does things look? If there is no season, there is a chance he could retire and be like a few players that called it a day after the last lock out
It depends what the landscape looks like after the CBA agreement (if there ever is one)... we could see a monumental change in contract terms for many players. There could be a huge number of buyouts/ UFA players hitting the market all at once.
Without having much certainly about the CBA and what it will bring... it's very hard to make decisions about which players to keep/dump.
Gagner... seems an obvious keeper... unless a better #2C option is available somewhere in a trade.
MPS... keep unless he looks like he's made zero development this year in OKC and they can bundle him up for a useful piece elsewhere in the lineup.
Jones... re-sign unless other better options are available from elsewhere... not likely though so probably a keeper.
Lander... re-sign... needs more development.
Hordichuk... indifferent on Hordy. Dime a dozen enforcers are dime a dozen... easily replaceable anytime.
Petrell... I like him but he's not critical to the team. Goes or stays... not a major factor.
Whitney... a healed and healthy Whitney is a strong asset to the Oilers for the next 2-3 years... a munted Whitney is close to useless and should be jettisoned. No idea which version will show up next year. Pretty much impossible to make a decision on him at this point.
Smid... obviously re-sign as he's a key stay at home guy for the next half decade or more.
Peckham... I think he could still be a useful asset to the team and if Potter sucks(which he likely will) and Sutton retires (which he likely will)... Peckham suddenly then becomes much more important. Teubert is the obvious competition for Peckham which makes Pecks somewhat expendable so I'm 50-50 on keeping Theo. All depends on what the lay of the land is after the CBA settles and how the dmen in OKC develop this year. Fedun, Marincin + Teubert could all be knocking on the door for playing time on the Oilers and Peckham doesn't really bring anything that those 3 can't deliver. In short I think Peckham is as good as gone... if not next season then very soon thereafter.
Khabi... easiest decision... tossed away like a case of empty Vodka bottles. He might have been a decent tutor for Dubyk, but his NHL days are over.

Smyth is still only 36 years old and even though there's no question that he's lost a step I really don't see him hanging them up just yet. If by chance he do call it quits then I believe it would be the perfect opportunity to get Paajarvi into the lineup. Possibly have a 3rd line of MPS-Horcoff-Hartikainen.
