British English and American English have both stemmed from a more primitive version of the language. English was originally spoken by the Germanic tribes (primarily Anglo-saxan) that begun to inhabit the isle of Great Britain after Roman occupation.
There is no such thing as a right or wrong way to speak a language. There are only conventions. A language's "rightness" is certified by the people who speak it. If it becomes customary among the populous then it becomes right, there is no official decree of what makes a part of speech correct or incorrect. The dictionary is a living document.
