I played it for about an hour, got bored, then never touched it again. Not really a fair critique but I think the general view among people that played it is that it wasn't as good as 3.
Set Far Cry 3 in Africa, remove all crafting, skills, and all the quests except random "go kill something" and you have Far Cry 2. Oh, and every crossroad has enemies which constantly respawn.
The shooter elements and terrain were great. Everything else was a disappointment. It was an open world game with nothing to do or accomplish in that world. I had fun doing a playthrough of it, but others will get bored by the lack of variety.

This, except I repeated the first hour a second time before Far Cry 3 came out

That's probably the sad thing about far cry 2. All it needs is a few minor details changed and it could have been a very fun game. Far cry 2 feels very betaish. Sparse world with no real fleshed out development.
Meh, I got this game free with my video card. It's okay but nothing really groundbreaking. I'll probably play it some more but it just isn't as amazing as everyone makes it out to be.
Little warning to anyone going for 100% game completion, the Relic 1 collectible is only available for a limited time. It's in the cave where your friends are located near the Dr.'s. Once you go to the second island, that cave is no longer accessible and you wont be able to collect it. So collect it as soon as you can, ideally.
It has no bearing on Trophy/Achievements though. On that note, I just got all the achievements last night. I still have a bunch of the side missions, Trials of the Rakyat and 60 more relics to collect though.
I am just about to head to the southern island but I can't find the 1st relic. I've bought the Loot and Item Maps and I still am unable to find it.
This game is so much fun. I would absolutely recommend it for even a casual gaming fan. For anyone just about to start the game, or just starting it, I would advise you to do two things quickly:
Spoil:
1. suppress your weapon. This will help you hunt both animals and pirates without attracting every bloody bad guy on the island.
2. craft, craft and craft. Focus on getting a bigger loot rucksack, followed by a bigger wallet and finally a bigger weapon holster. Hold more things -> sell more things -> buy more guns and attachments.
