I'm going to guess the NHL gives up contract to 6 yrs with an 8 yrs for your own FA

A 9 year CBA

But having make whole gone might be a hard one to get back

Bettman said the concept of the make whole is off the table. He said anything they put on the table this week is now off the table.
God, I am so sick of Bettman's "ITS OFF THE TABLE!" crap. Does he seriously think he is negotiating with 5 year olds or something?

meh. so over this right now.

not enough to not stay informed, but enough to not care anymore.

my prediction: lost season, if not more.

My favourite part was Gary telling them to go pound sand and that what they put on the table is now off. That was awesome.

Lets see how many more games the players want to play. I deleted them all from twitter because they are annoying when they talk about what is fair. I can;t wait to see more idiotic quotes like that one above.

It will be entertaining.

I believe that Bettman said that the owners have pressured him to take it off the table

I just don't know what glue the players are sniffing.

Whatever, will be fun to watch Nuge and Yak at the WJHC.

Which holds exactly as much water as a used car salesman saying "... but my manager says I can only make you this special offer today!"

Seriously, do people actually buy this stuff? I am amazed. I thought this never worked, but I guess this explains why people do this judging from the way people are reacting. Fehr is doing the same thing, but at least he actually understands the art of subtlety.

Packaged deal, explicitly stated by the NHL.

Contract term/variance - a hill they will die on.

Money in the make it whole proposal contigent on 10 year CBA.

No money outside the system.

If that has been the NHL's stance from the start, then Fehr is blowing smoke up everyone's a$$ with his statements.

You can really see how invested Bettman is in this process, you'd think he was one of the owners himself instead of a paid representative. Compare that with Fehr who seems like he's winging it most of the time, and barely up to speed on the state of the NHL over the last 10 years.

If I was an owner right now I'd suspend operations so I didn't have to look at these clowns again.

It looks like we agree on something.

Why the hell do the owners give a damn about max contract length? You don't want a player for 10 years don't sign him to the deal.

Jesus christ. **** Bettman, **** Fehr, **** the NHL and **** the NHLPA. This is the most pathetic thing I've seen in a long while. I don't care what side is to blame, or who is right or who pissed in whoevers cereal. The time to get a deal was about 3 months ago. Enough with this garbage.

I guess I'll see you all next season.

I just asked Bettman how any commissioner could justify TWO lost seasons in EIGHT years. Answer in column. Let’s just say he was pretty POd.

But if they player wants it you have to give it to him or he will take his talanets to someone who will, they are being forced to by the current set of rules. If crosby wants 10 years, and thats in the rules your going to have to give it to him

Utterly unrealistic when teams are competing for talent, and if there was some kind of get together or agreement on this whatsoever, the NHLPA would send a collusion flare off so fast, it's not even funny.

What stops the big market teams front loading 20 year contracts and poaching all the other teams once again?

This is ****ing disgraceful, I'm trying to watch a premier game between NYK and Miami Heat, and they're going on and on with this lockout nonsense, are the ratings for this garbage in Canada really that much better than what they would be for a prime time NBA match up between two of the leagues best? If so, utterly pathetic. I wish I could ***** slap each and every one of these TSN idiots. I don't care about this damn lock out anymore, what happens happens. How does this benefit the viewer, who gives a flying **** anymore.

Guy, 4AM twitter traffic about the lockout beats out NBA ratings on TSN.

My guess is

(1) Larger markets have a significant advantage in signing free agents because they can take the risk and cover the insurance payments more easily. Many have argued that fans in N.A. expect a degree of parity. Shortening contracts should do this.
(2) The latest CBA has seen an increase in contract length in an attempt the circumvent the cap. Once again, big market teams benefit.
(3) Larry Brooks mentioned that the owners feel that contracts in excess of 5 years hurt the resale value of teams. Potential buyers see these long contracts as a big risk to take on.
(4) Long contracts can hurt labour mobility.
(5) Shorter contracts mean players will be more motivated to play. No retirement contracts.
(6) With the 5-5 rule (5 year 5% variance) the Weber OS is unlikely to have happened this summer.
