Rhaegar never wanted to be a knight or a warrior. He was a book worm who had a musicians hands and voice. It was only after he read something in a book that he hastily chose to become a warrior and a knight.

Ser Barristan Selmy and Eddard Stark had great respect for Rhaegar, as did the majority of the seven kingdoms population.

The only person who seemingly did not like Rhaegar was Robert, and even then I'm sure he must have had some level of respect and admiration for the Prince.

I wouldn't go that far. Robert hated Rheagar about as much as a man can hate anything.

Other than Robert, though, you're right. Pretty much everyone else had great things to say about Rhaegar. I think there's even a line in the books, maybe from Ned, about how differently everything could have turned out if Rhaegar were on the throne and not Aerys.

I mean, it's debatable. People forget that he was married to Elia of Dorne before his little episode with Lyanna Stark. It stands to reason Robert Baratheon and Brandon Stark (Ned's older brother) would still have revolted in that case, even if Rhaegar was king, I don't see either of them ready to allow that. Perhaps Brandon wouldn't have wound up choked to death, but perhaps so. By marrying Elia instead of Cersei, he would still have extremely frosty relations with Tywin Lannister (almost more important in the long run).

Rhaegar was awesomesauce. He would be my favorite character if he hadn't died before the timeline of the books lol. Also, I'm really happy Cersei couldn't get her paws on him. It seems to be a constant downer for her.

Dumb how?

Because he's been described as one of the most well rounded characters whose excelled at everything he's put effort into. He was 'perfect' in a sense.

I know I'm in the minority but I preferred when it was revived as GAME OF THRONES: THE NEW ADVENTURES. Yeah much of the cast and crew were replaced but we got so many great episodes.
It really jumped the shark though with too many time travel, dream, what if, and Patchface 4th wall breaking episodes. Though the one where Ned takes the throne instead of Robert and marries Cersei and Tyrion with Lysa and the one where time travelers try to get to the bottom of Jon's parentage were funny.

Well I can't post spoilers in this thread so I'll just say he's dumb.

Because he's directly responsible for Robert's Rebellion and the fall of his own family.

Just because they are both fighting the Lannisters (technically the Baratheons but that started even more confusion ) doesn't mean they are on the same side. I wonder how people's perception of Stannis will change when he talks about how Robb is just as bad a usurper as Joff.

I'm amazed that non-book readers like Stannis at all.

I would actually like to see some sort of survey that compares how book readers and TV watchers differ on their interpretations of characters. Do they differ on Catelyn, Littlefinger, Davos?

As a non book reader, only read book 1, I kinda like Stannis. Like others said he was awesome for the Blackwater episode. But if he's going after Rob I'll want him to die.
Catelyn I'm indifferent, going behind Rob and being a ***** to Jon are the things that stick out.
Littlefinger is a **** for what he did to Ned. - Also hate how he changed his voice from S1 to S2.
And for Davos, I really like him so far. Seems like a honourable and loyal person, like Ned.

For this season I'm most excited for the North of the Wall stuff, Jon joining Ygritte and the wildlings intrigues me. Next would be Khalesi going to Westeros.

That would be a very interesting survey. As a book reader, I've definitely noticed a difference between my feelings on certain characters and the way non-readers feel about those characters.

As for Stannis, I think the show makes him out to be a total bad-ass in the Blackwater episode and that's why non-readers like him. In the book he's not in the front lines of the battle, which I think makes much more sense. Why would Stannis rush in as part of the vanguard? All it would take is one arrow to the throat and his entire campaign is over.

I also think the show makes Catelyn more likeable than she is in the books, and Jaime less likeable than he is in the books.
