I loved Arya in the books, and I think Maisie Williams is doing a fan-freaking-tastic job of playing the part!

Joffrey Baratheon is also a kid in the books yet Gleeson has been lauded for his role. Book adaptation excuse isn't used there.
Don't think the Joffrey comparison applies. Joffrey is supposed to be younger than Robb, but older than Sansa in the books. I don't know about exact age but I'd say in the 14/15 range. Around the same age as Dany is in the books.

In real life, Gleeson was 19 when the series started. In comparison, is a 24 year old attempting to play a 13/14 year old girl. I think the book to screen adaptation is harder for Emilia than it is for Jack.

And that isn't to downplay Gleeson's acting at all, which has been nothing short of brilliant as Joffrey.

I wouldn't say I dislike Dan'y story, it's okay, but it suffers from being too isolated from the rest of the storylines, in both the books and the television series.

I thought it was common knowledge that the characters were bumped up in age a bit for this show.

TV Dany is not 13, Sansa is not 11/12, Joffrey is not 13, Jon and Robb are not 15, etc. That is the best memory I have for the kids, hell, Rickon is a baby in the books.

Even the 'parents' are older. No way Cat is in her 30's, same with Ned, and Robert.

Unless I've got it all mixed up.

Quick search on Google turns up(in AGOT) Joffrey at 12, Robb/Jon at 14, Sansa at 11, Arya 9, Bran 7, Dany 13. Margaery at 14/15.

They've obviously added age to the entire character base.

Yeah historically those types of numbers are accurate, for example in Romeo & Juliet during Shakespeares time Juliet would be portrayed as 13, but for today's television you gotta add 3 years to those ages.

Yeah, HBO does a lot of things differently than other networks, but not sure depicting a 13y/o Dany with Khal Drogo would go over so well.

I'm also trying to remember, didn't Cat say something to Ned along the lines of him going to war 18 years ago and coming back with a baby? That would add a few years onto Jon and Robb, certainly.

I do know for a fact Sansa is 13 in the first episode, but even so she is likely made to look even older.

It was something along the lines of 17 years ago Ned left and a year left came back with a baby. Something along those lines IIRC

I was thinking about Season 1 with Sansa's first period. When season 1 was filmed Sophie Turner would have been either 13 or 14 years old. While it is possible that a girl doesn't get her first period until she's that age, I think the average age is somewhere around 12. Of course the problem is that while in GoTs world she would be still be around that age, in real life she's 17 now and looks much more mature. That's the issue with child actors. From the pictures that I've seen Bran looks a lot older in the past year too. Arya still doesn't look like she's aged too much. If she does it would be a bit weird .

For TV it makes more sense for all of the characters to be in the late teens/early 20s anyway. It would be a bit funny watching 13 year olds fighting for the throne on HBO.

I'm not saying I'm surprised that the actors are older than their book counterparts, obviously.

What I'm saying is that it needs to be kept in mind when judging certain characters and certain scenes. Specifically Emilia Clarke being very *****y and moany about her dragons.

It's funny cause if you're watching the show you would think Robb is like 19/20 and Joffrey 13/14.

If someone stole your dragons (the only ones in the entire world), you'd be pretty *****y and moany too.

I still say it's a shame in the pilot episode they couldn't fit in a scene for Robb and Joffrey sparing in the training yard (getting a personal rivalry going before the wars start), but that's probably a big reasons why.

Yeah Joff comes out with the moral victory in the book because they don't let him fight with a real sword where as Joffrey was allowed to. It would look really strange if someone who looked as old as tv Robb wasn't allowed to use a real sword but Joff was.
