a thought experiment. let's say this is an article in the toronto sun, a major newspaper in the city i used to live in. or pretend this is adam proteau in the hockey news, or one of those countdowns on tsn's sportscenter.
1. gretzky. explanation: probably a reasonable one.
2. gilmour. explanation: quote from don cherry, then reference to toronto being the "capital of hockey"
3. crosby [or, say if this was five years from now, insert flavour of the month]. explanation: something about a new breed of athlete as brand, reference to lebron james
4. sittler. explanation: photograph of his 1976 goal celebration
5. old timey leaf [arbitrarily pick one: could be keon, could be conacher, could be jackson, could be bower, broda, salming, it literally doesn't matter]. explantion: paraphrase from wikipedia entry
Or you could add a 5'9" or less player who "proved that you don't have to be big to play hockey," because before Martin St. Louis broke into the NHL, every single player ever was over 6 feet tall.

This thread needs more Brooks and Eruzione, the most iconic names in the most iconic hockey event of all time (most iconic event in Olympic and US Sports history on top of that as well). Gretzky, Lemieux, Orr and Howe are in there too.
Though I like Cherry Howie Meeker has done a lot more for hockey in Canada. In the 1960's The Howie Meeker School was formed and opened and thousands of kids in Na learned new skills and learned to develop and improve.Meeker played against Richard and Howe and Broadcasted Lafleur Orr and Gretzey and as a player won 4 stanley Cups.He was also a war hero nothing else needs to be said
Id also add regionally & nationally to some extent John Brophy, Willie
O'Ree and 4sure, Dennis Bonvie in the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area.
Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza (originally Northeastern Pennsylvania Civic Arena and Convention Center, formerly First Union Arena and Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza).
Yepp. Pretty sure he could clean up if he ever decided to run for Mayor, State or maybe even Federal Senate Seat in that region.... also the Christian brothers & really the entire family up in Minnesota, thats another one. O'Ree as mentioned down in the San Diego basin. Bobby Clarke in Philly. The Hull brothers, Stan Mikita & Glen Hall in Chicago; Armstrong, Bower, Keon & Horton in Toronto. Theres a ton of them by State/Province/city/town/burb.
