I've sort of wanted to be a doctor since i was 17, at 23 i'm...not very close at all to getting there (maybe if i do well in school) However, the human body is still one of the coolest things on our planet IMHO. Amazingly complex, so many systems working together at the cellular level coming together to form intricate organs and collaborating body systems. Amazing stuff!
Whats the coolest thing about the human body that you can think of? Here's some inspiration from ListVerse if you need it...
The sheer complexity of the human body is an amazing thing in itself. Back when I was in school and took a cellular biology class, our prof emailed the class a Harvard animation that shows many of the processes that occur in the cell.
The brain and by far. Something so complex and it controls the rest of the organism and even if you remove half of it, the other half can adapt and pick up the slack.
Doctors don't heal, they just put us in a position to heal
Over the course of 10 years, every living cell in your body dies and is replaced. You, and everyone else, are made of cells less than 10 years old.
You're all a bunch of cradle robbers
Yeah this is largely true, but not universally.
I've always thought that the chemical actions responsible for neural signals were pretty awesome- so much happens in such a small amount of time, all coordinated too.
I'd say that the brain, in general, is pretty mesmerizing to think about.
Also, to quote Neil deGrasse Tyson, the fact that we're all made up of supernova remnants is pretty neat, too.
Always liked that quote, essentially we are the universe experiencing itself. Regarding the body, I'm not sure if it counts because it's abstract, but the fact that we're conscious is the coolest thing. By extension of that fact and to more appropriately answer the question, the brain.

The plasticity is pretty amazing. People missing a complete hemisphere but yet can still function relatively well.

Not really true. Plenty of people start med school in their 30's.

4 years med school and a minimum of 3 years residency will put a lot of people in substantial debt heading into their 40's, and pyhsician pay is going nowehre but down.
My advice to anyone considering medicine as a career is, if you love it, and cant imagine doing anything else, then it will be rewarding and satisfying(thats how it is for me)... but if you choose medicine over some other career that you would have enjoyed just as well, you'll likely be frustrated and probably regret it...
Two microscopic cells come together. Within three weeks, those cells have formed a foetal mass with a heart beat. By two months parts are starting to distinguish themselves, limb buds, head, face, eyes, etc. By the fourth month the fetus is visably human including visibly distinct gender, albeit the proportions are still working out and organs are developing. Fetal urine is the amniotic fluid that is inhaled to develop the lungs and swallowed. By the start of the third trimester, the fetus is developed enough it is possible although difficult to survive. By the seventh month the survival rate has vastly improved, and at the eighth month, the baby is basically developed and survivable, but hangs on another month for good measure. Amazing stuff!
