Pavelski is signed through 2014 for $4m/yr, has offensive high comparable to what Filppula did last season but has done it for more years, and is a gritty two-way player.
He's not going to cost any more than Flip to extend if Flip repeats, and the Wings have a real problem if Flip never reaches that level again.
Maybe we can toss in Quincey, Miller/Mursak, and a pick and bring back Boyle also?
The fact that Pavelski isn't a UFA until after next season makes this a no-brainer. It'd be like getting another season of Filppula next year for 4M instead of whatever crazy number we'll have to pay to keep him.
Marginal upgrade at best. I'd do it for the simple fact Pavelski is signed to a decent deal and Filppula is an impending UFA, though.
Pretty much this, plus Pavelski scores big goals and isn't as much of a pass happy player which I think we need. I like Filppula if he signed a similar deal to what Pavelski has I would be happy with that, but I see his numbers coming in much higher. Where this does hurt us some I think is team speed.
Pavelski is one of the best faceoff guys (to replace/join with Datsyuk and his 56% FO level), a right handed shot.
A shoot-first player, great defensive play, penalty kill. Babcock would love him.
I could say, Pavelski is equal player at 5-on-5 hockey, but on special teams (both PP and PK) he is by far superior piece compared to Filppula and also that Faceoff specialist.
Wouldnt think twice. More goal scoring and at least equal defensive play. Has proven he can produce while playing a great two way game at center and a righty
The only reason i wouldnt do it is because the Wings need as many defensively responsible forwards as possible considering the state of the defense. You need to give the D as much breathing room as possible so it doesnt implode.
I;d do it. Pavelski has some sandpaper in his game, is tough on draws and seems to elevate his game when it matters.
Flip has had one big season and needed to move to wing full time to have it.
