The NHL drought continues: Steve Levy was able to sneak in a 15-second NHL lockout update at the end of Monday's broadcast, good enough to keep the NHL from being shut out in coverage yet again. From June 15 (the week after the Stanley Cup final) through Dec. 13, hockey has received 18 total minutes of coverage on the SportsCenter, which amounts to 0.2 percent.

Not entirely shocking. ESPN Sportscenter has become a promo tool for the sports they own broadcasting rights to. Anyone have any numbers on NBC Sports Network coverage of the lockout?

Codeword ESPN...

There would be be maybe 5 more minutes of coverage if there was a full season. It's better they stay away from it.

A league that has no contract to show games on that network...that isn't even playing games right now...isn't being covered on that network?

ESPN sets their nose against whoever doesn't give them what they want. Hey at least they haven't made up completely edited pieces like they did with the UFC on fighter pay last year. Dana White knew he was being set up so he had his own cameras filming him and Lorenzo's interviews and ended up having to post the full interviews after the ESPN ones came out because they really tried to jam the UFC in a bad light.

Hasn't this been pretty much the same since last lockout; not much hockey coverage on ESPN?

In fairness, that is about 18 minutes more than the league has actually played.

Don't they only show about 30 minutes of hockey related things a month when there is a season ?

I agree to a point.

However, the real bottom line is that if the NHL were a big time relevant sport in the US, then ESPN would have no choice but to air more.

Unfortunately it's not -- something Fehr and Bettman seem to be trying to ensure is also the case for the next 10-15 years.

How the NHL and PA cannot understand that they are not absolutely killing the golden duck (ok, it's not a goose, but $3.3B is still $3.3B) is mind boggling.

That sounds like a lot of air time for the NHL. You sure WNBA wasnt added to the NHL's air time?

Exactly. Everyone complains about ESPN on this board, but the fact is that it's not ESPN's job to promote the NHL on Sportscenter. Their job is to report on the sports their viewers care about.

Do people here honestly believe that ESPN ignores the NHL just because they don't carry their games? That there's this huge demand for NHL coverage from their viewers, but ESPN is intentionally sacrificing SC ratings just because?

I don't even watch Sportscenter anymore. No reason to, the highlights are view able online minutes after they happen now. Scores are readily available 24/7 on phones, laptops, ipads, etc. Athlete interviews aren't interesting

But I'm not surprised about the lack of coverage, the lockout is taking place during America's most popular sports season

Supply and demand.

If no-one demands it, they're not going to supply it.

This is the only time I've ever been happy about their lack of NHL coverage. Not like ESPN ever gave hockey any pub anyway, but the NHL has now gone from obscurity to irrelevance and that is exactly what these idiots deserve.

Better than the utterly unwatchable coverage of lockout issues that they showed when the NFL and NBA went through this. Seemed like that crap was never going to end.

To be honest, the league deserves this.

I think you can describe what has happened, more or less, in half that time.

They don't even deserve 18 minutes, it's ridiculous watching the TSN blowhards talk about nothing every single day.

has nothing to do with that

if UNTIED STATERS cared about NHL then ESPN would cover it more

fact is they don't care for NHL or Ice Hockey they like NFL, NBA, MLB, College Basketball/Football over it(hell even WNBA gets higher ratings then NHL is some markets)

That's more than I have devoted to watching Sports Center on ESPN.

I have of course watched football games on ESPN, but I don't hang around to watch their highlights.

Not surprising. They might do 100 minutes during the whole course of the season. The only reason it would ever go higher is if they have a really ugly incident on ice. They don't care about the NHL, so 18 minutes when it isn't happening is a higher number than I expected.

0.2% of ESPN coverage = 18 minutes

therefore

100% of ESPN coverage = 9000 minutes

9000 minutes = 150 hours

1 hour per show = 150 shows

Seems about right.

What do they really have to report anyway? This has gone according to script. There was never any plans for this to play out until the bitter end. It will get done after the holidays just so they can salvage the season. Because another lost season will do so much damage that will be very difficult to overcome.

Not to mention...there's no supply. ESPN could scream, OH MY GOD WE WANT HOCKEY and then...
