IIHF World ChampionshipDiscuss International Tournaments like the WJC, Olympics, and World Cup, as they take place, or discuss past tournaments. performances.
In Edmonton, the Oilers come first and Canada comes second. It's how we roll.
I don't mind Yakupov and RNH missing a few games to play out the tournament because I think it will be a good experience for them and I don't want the Oilers to foster bad will with either player for the chance to win a couple extra games in what will likely be another season outside the playoffs.
But if I was faced with having to choose between the Oilers making the playoffs and Canada achieving any level of international success I'd take the Oilers making the playoffs any day of the week.
The Oilers arent making the playoffs. Lets get serious for a minute. If they released RNH to go play in the tournament then, at least in my mind and even as an Oiler fan, I say see you after its over Ryan and Nail.
Frankly I could give a fiddlers rip about the Oilers or the NHL atm.
I am looking forward to the WJC though. Its a bit of an inconvenience to have the games on in the middle of the night but it is what it is.
It would be completely crass and bush league of the Oilers to recall any WJC participants after the plane leaves the runway. If for some reason a new cba is in place during camp and before they leave, I could see the Oilers calling him/them back.
For my money I say let them go regardless.
It could even play a part in getting Edmonton another 1st overall!
The problem with predicting that Hudon will not be in the lineup is that:
- Bob Mackenzie really liked what he saw enough to consider him for a Top 6 spot (I actually think he should be on the 3rd line with Danault)
- Steve Spott liked what he saw (link)
- Kevin Prendergast liked what he saw (link)
- Many analysts (dobberhockey, TSN analysts watching Canada-Russia challenge) were surprised at how good he was
I think that unless Hudon has a terrible camp, he will be on the team.
I see that someone else beat me to it... but I supplied links!
The way that Drouin, Mackinnon and Huberdeau played in the SSS I find it dissapointing that Drouin will probably not make the team also.
May be a mistake not to give Drouin a spot if NHL teams come calling for all of your firepower. If Mac/Drouin make it, they are guarenteed to be with the team the whole way.
I think Mackinnon is a lock though. Drouin not so much. Hopefully they can dazzle the higher ups in camp.
I selfishly want to see Drouin in this tournament this year but i realize just how few spots there are and older more veteran players possibly getting the edge over him.

Yeah that was purely a hypothetical. The Oilers aren't going to make the playoffs even in an abbreviated 2013 season.
If a new CBA isn't negotiated before the planes leave for UFA, I'd like to see both RNH and Yakupov play the entire WJC. That said, I can see where reasonable minds could differ on this issue.
The coach has already started to soften the blow to Mac and Drouin. He said on TSN yesterday that "it is a 19 year olds tournament, and the past has shown that."
He is prepping them not to make the team. I think they should get the same look as others. But we all know coaches has favorites. The coach even told Murphy 2 days before the announcement that he was being picked and what to work on.

But... but... he said this is the most nervous he's ever been!
Replace Corrado with Rielly on the top pairing. If Corrado makes it, it will likely be as a 7th defender. I would also prefer Reinhart over Wotherspoon.
Rielly - Hamilton
Ouellete - Harrington
Murphy - Reinhart
7th D man
Some good news re: the recall rules. Toronto G.M. Burke wants clarification on the recall rules, but has stated Morgan Rielly (one of the 11 on the NHL/CHL recall list) will not be recalled if NHL training camps open up before the conclusion of the WJHC.
Agreed: Puempel is a beast and should've been there (though he is injured). Agreed that Subban should start, too.
Doesn't it make more sense to have Huberdeau at Centre and Mackinnon on the right side, rather than having two left-handed wingers?
I thought about it, however Huberdeau has the experience to move around. As talented as Mackinnon is he has seemed out of place when not at Centre. I figured leave Mackinnon where he does the best, and Hubs can adjust better.

Teams just need clarification about Jr players. If Jr players can be recalled after the World Juniors have ended, then most GM's will allow those players to attend. The only one who would not be attending would be RNH, maybe Huberdeau. IMO.
I'm not much of a fan of BB myself... but today I'll cut him slack. Now we need a few more GMs to get on board.
To be fair to the other GMs Rielly wasn't going to be playing in the NHL this year anyway. Huberdeau and RNH (maybe even Rattie) are a different story.

You don't think a shortened season favours younger players, who have been playing games?
I know you guys like your stock pile of young assets and want to add to it, but I'm of the opinion that the Oil easily has a shot at the playoffs.
I mean they're no lock for it or anything, but they have a good chance.

A 9 game stint becomes a bigger thing as the possible season shrinks. No doubt Rielly was getting that at the least.
