Orpik is fundamentally correct (even if he is kind of an a-hole for saying it): it is the league's front office and each team's front office that is responsible for "marketing the game" nationally and locally, and doing damage control from this lockout. Unless you want to group in "being nice to fans and never saying anything that will upset anyone" as "marketing" -- which is a stretch.

Until Orpik starts treating fans like dirt (maybe he already does -- as noted I have no idea on that), you're just spinning your wheels. It's a free country the guy has a right to voice his opinion even if his timing demonstrates he doesn't have much common sense or tact. Like I said I don't give a crap what he or any other player thinks about damage control or marketing. All I know is they're doing nothing to find a solution and one was staring them in the face a couple weeks ago so... their words mean jack squat.
See, I think you are looking at players responsibilities to narrowly. Especially when you talk about someone like Orpik. He isn't the typical Canadian high school drop out, he did attend college so he should have some idea wtf is going on. Anyone paid millions to play a game has more responsibilities to his employer than you and I. He is the product so he better do everything he can to make it more marketable and comments like these just do not do that.

Pretty much. They want x% of HRR but don't want to work for it, can't have it both ways. All you want to do is play? Ok then, but then a big part of HRR is separated and solely for the NHL.

According to TSN, NHL made new offer to NHLPA yesterday that had movements on player contracts, etc. Seems like an effort to strike a deal in the beginning of the new year.

This strikes me as a last ditch effort by the NHL to save the season. I anticipate this resulting in one final meeting between the two sides which will decide the season.

May god have mercy on our souls.

Details of the NHL's recent proposal were leaked:

Quote:
6. The “NHL/NHLPA Joint Owner-Player Broadcasting/Marketing Committee”
(CBA Article 32) will be reconstituted to consult and establish policy on
League broadcasting and marketing matters, as well as other League
business functions and initiatives.
The NHL totally put this part in their offer just to troll Brooks Orpik.

Love the potential change in the lottery draft in the new CBA proposal.

For those that don't know, all non-playoff teams would have a chance for the number 1 pick. Can't find any specific details but most likely fashioned in the way the NBA does it.

Martin also seems the obvious buyout candidate if they need to clear space.

Martin for sure is the buyout candidate, if they ever figure out a way to un-**** themselves and start playing.

Shero could have traded Martin according to a lot of people even reporters so I don't think he's getting bought out. At least not this season. Maybe he will be next year if he's still struggling.

No they'll buy him out next summer if he can't be traded, in order to get the cap to $60M while extending Malkin's contract, etc. Martin is history if this CBA goes through as-is.

And frankly it's a better offer than the last one (which surprises me), so if the players don't accept it, **** them and the horse they road in on. The NHL has more than gone half way at this point. And they should make Orpik serve on the Marketing committee just to torment him.

Oh wait, I am assuming progress will be made this weekend. Crazy CV!

I had a chance to read over the detailed offer in LeBrun's column and the NHL has made a fair offer and moved close enough that a deal should be closed.

Not sure what else the NHLPA could reasonably be looking for at this point.

I'm screaming (internally) "JUST TAKE IT."

Has there been any leaks or speculation regarding the players' reaction to this?

Guaranteed money for the Player's Child Welfare Fund, designed to put every player's kids through college, should their career end due to serious injury before their 35th birthday.

NHLPA is said to be holding out for a free lifetime supply of coffee from Tim Hortons.

From James Mirtle in Toronto after yesterday's players-only conference call:

Quote:
General consensus from players on PA call: League's movement wasn't all that much. It's enough to restart talks, however.
And this from Dreger just now about today's call:

Quote:
CBA conf calls\discussions expected to drift into early evening. Told calls are purely "informational." No bargaining going on.

So assuming this CBA **** gets dealt with in time for the 2013-2014 season, will the realignment structure agreed to last year still stand or will they go back to the drawing board? Personally, I'm not a fan of what they decided last year and would much rather see Winnipeg move west and the Blue Jackets move east.

Unbelievable the players are still bargaining at this point. I'd love to ***** slap them one by one.
