Rule 5 draft in hockey

Since there is not much hockey to talk about i have been following the off season for baseball quite a bit this winter. The rule 5 draft took place today and was wondering if something similar in hockey would work?

Basically a team can protect 30 players (40 in baseball) who are signed to contracts. There are exceptions in baseball for age so i was thinking for hockey any player on their entry level contract is off limits. If a player is claimed they must be on an NHL roster for the duration of the season or returned to the old team.

This would be primarily for fringe players who may be stuck on the depth chart on certain teams but would have a chance on others. For the Oilers I'm thinking players like omark, plante, etc.

Do you think this would be something worth looking into for hockey?

nhl has it with IV UFA, If player X has not played X amount of games by they are a certain age they are UFA
Hockey had the waiver draft as well for 30 years or so

"If the Detroit Red Wings are defying gravity" by consistently contending without the benefit of high draft picks, "the Edmonton Oilers are defying lift.

Welcome to Edmonton Connor McDavid--the rest of you HA HA HA HA HA HA
