New Orleans........... Pelicans?

Reports are saying that the New Orleans Hornets plan on changing the nickname of the team as early as the 2013/14 season. After considering "Krewe" (the name of the costumer paraders during Mardi Gras) or "Brass" as new team names, the group has decided on "Pelicans".

Despite sounding absolutely ridiculous, the name does make sense for the team. New Orleans being in Louisiana, and Louisiana being "the Pelican State". The flag of the State features a pelican while the State bird is the brown pelican.

And for those who may think this isn't real... http://sports.yahoo.com/news/sources...231227843.html

Terrible name. Sounds like a AA team.

Benson's wife wants the colors to be Red, Blue and Gold no matter the name also.

Hopefully MJ brings the Hornets name back to Charlotte now. He said he'd consider it.

Extremely bad name. I'm not going to quantify what differentiates a good name and a bad name, but you know something's a bad name when the initial reaction is almost universally negative.

I think it's an awesome name. Very ABA-like.

At least like noted in the other thread, we'll have plenty of "I see what you did there" meme jokes out of it

That, and the realization that the team's acronym would be N.O.Pe, is slowly winning me over....

I love it. I believe they'd have excellent sales for children and really my biggest thumbs up is that it provides the opportunity for Hornets name to return to it's rightful owner: Charlotte.

Depending on the design and colour scheme the Pelicans t-shirt could be a popular purchase.

I just hope they don't go and incorporate a basketball into the logo like nearly half the league does.

I actually don't mind the name tbh. It kinda has a more basebally feel I guess. I heard someone in the media suggest the name the New Orleans Voodoo, forget who it was tho. (this was like 3-4 months ago)

Best name option there was, imho, but problem is that it's already held by an AFL team.

Teams with a basketball incorporated into their logo in the NBA (by my count):

Atlanta Hawks
Boston Celtics
Brooklyn Nets
Cleveland Cavalier
Dallas Mavericks
Detroit Piston
Indiana Pacers
Los Angeles Clippers
Los Angeles Lakers
Miami Heat
New Orleans Hornets
New York Knicks
OKC Thunder
Orlando Magic
Philadelphia 76ers
Phoenix Suns
Sacramento Kings
Toronto Raptors
Utah Jazz
Washington Wizards
Charlotte Bobcats (New Logo)

Teams with no basketball incorporated into their logo:

Portland Trailblazers
San Antonia Spurs
Milwaukee Bucks
Minnesota Timberwolves
Memphis Grizzlies
Denver Nuggets
Golden State Warriors
Houston Rockets
Chicago Bulls

21/30 = 70% so yes you were very close.

Meanwhile, in the NHL the only teams to incorporate a stick and/or puck are Pittsburgh, San Jose, NYI, Colorado, and Washington (16.7%)

In MLB there are 12 teams to incorporate a bat or baseball (40%)

Finally, in the NFL only two teams use a football in a part of a primary logo (Tampa Bay and the NY Jets) while only another 3 use a football helmet (Oakland, Miami, and Cleveland).

The high use of a basketball in team logos in the NBA is far too common so hopefully they don't go that route.

The New Orleans Brass sounds pretty cool. They should have gone with that.

I think in the MLB more than half the teams use a circle logo as their main logo.

New orleans had a minor leauge hockey team called the brass in 1997,they folded in 2002,because the new orleans hornets were moving to the arena where the brass played and the The state of Louisiana, which owns the arena, then tried to force the Brass to bear the expense of converting the arena from a basketball floor to an ice playing surface as a condition of staying in the Arena. The expense was more than the Brass' ownership was willing to pay. The Municipal Auditorium had recently replaced its floor, and in the process removed its ice plant. Without a suitable home, the Brass folded.

My guess is that the main logo will involve a pelican dribbling or holding a basketball.

The alternate logo will involve a "furious" pelican with its wings spread out and moving in forward motion.

Portland's logo is a graphic design of the five players on each side of the court forming a basketball.
