2012: 124

In his worst year, he went 200 innings and put up a sub 5 era.

To further this nerd post:

Of all pitchers with 900+ IP over the last 5 years (180+/season), Dempster is 17th in xFIP, ahead of guys like Kuroda, Lester, Verlander, and Shields

Granted, pitching in the NL Central will provide some bias in this stat, but it is still really impressive regardless.

His K rate has been steady, even with the drop in velocity he has experienced over the past couple of years. Meanwhile, he has fine tuned his control and secondary stuff even further.

I hope we go after Bud Norris. He could be a cheap guy for the back of the rotation. He wouldn't cost all that much in terms of prospects either

I'm reaching here but since the NYM need an OF and catcher, what about Ellsbury and Salty for Johan Santana? I figure that would only happen if Dickey re-signs with the Mets but that whole situation is crazy. Slim chance this happens, but I would at least ask the Mets and see what they say.

I would kill myself if we made that trade. Kill myself.

EDIT: He was sooooo bad after his no hitter. Like worse than Humber was after his.

I'd do that deal if we get the 2004 version of Santana. If the Mets can guarantee that in writing, go for it Cherington!

To further this, his arm is hanging on by rubber bands and I would rather let Ellsbury walk for nothing and collect the draft picks then trade him for a pitcher who has not been effective in 3 years.

The Mets legitimately just said "**** it, let's shut him down" after his last 6 starts

Yeah he really was terrible...8.27 ERA in his last 10 starts, 15.63 in his last 5.

Not to mention he makes 25 million next year.

They'd travel back in time they'd say yes so fast.

This.....this is awful.

I award you no points, and may god have mercy on your soul.

it's not often you can give up two assets for a guy who had a .964 ops v. in his last 10 starts.

which were stretched from june 8 to august 17.

santana's cooked.

it's great that he threw that no hitter (* ) but he's beyond cooked.

that the mets are cheaping out on dickey when they did nothing but back a dump truck of money up to santana's house is kind of silly.

According to The Associated Press, the Red Sox will make three payments of $3.9 million each to the Dodgers in the next three years, with disbursements to come in 2013, 2014 and 2015, to complete the August blockbuster that sent Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford, Josh Beckett and Nick Punto to Los Angeles in exchange for Allen Webster, Rubby De La Rosa, Jerry Sands, Ivan De Jesus Jr. and James Loney.

The payment schedule has limited implications for the Sox’ efforts to avoid the luxury tax, most notably in 2014, when doing so provides the team with a potential rebate of revenue-sharing money that could lead to millions of dollars in savings for the club. As of now, assuming that the team’s three-year, $39 million deal with Mike Napoli is finalized and with the payment to the Dodgers factored in, the team would still have more than $45 million that it could spend on contracts for 2014 while staying under that season’s $189 million luxury tax threshold.

While the Sox remain on the hook for a total of $11.7 million for the contracts of the players they sent to the Dodgers, Los Angeles will pay the remaining $250.8 million on the four former Red Sox players contracts, thus giving the Sox considerable financial flexibility going forward.

But all in all, I don't like what the Sox are doing this off-season. Not at all! Napoli and Victorino are complementary pieces. First of all, I didn't get the Victorino-signing. I originally thought he would become a bargain with all these surplus CF's/OF's available. I didn't think he would get 3 years. Too bad he can't hit RHP. That makes him the #8 hitter in our line-up, #2 against LHP. Napoli is good, I like him and his Fenway-swing, but he's not that big of a bat. Best suited in the #6 slot on a (very) good offense.
Dempster would be just the icing on the cake. They haven't signed him yet, but they tried to (2/25), which just shows how bad they are at doing business. Dempster is a 5.xx ERA type pitcher in the AL (east).

What are they trying to accomplish with a Dempster? That's the middle ground between building a contender and re-building. You could call it the "road to nowhere" with Dempster being our Captain.
At least the clubhouse atmosphere will be great while being a sub .500 team.
Go look at the stats. They were better than the Sox pitching staff in just about every quantifiable category last year.

http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/team/_/...2/seasontype/2

Call it a fluke if you want, hang onto this false hope that Lester is suddenly going to wake up and come out of this season and a half long funk to magically fix the staff if you want, but I'm just going by what I see. Ryan Dempster isn't the answer.

What happened to Napoli? They announce a deal then nothing happens? No presser to introduce the guy? Nothing? Sounds to me like the Sox are pulling their usual routine when they see something they don't like on the physical. Probably nickel and diming the dude over a specific finding. If I were a FA, and a team started pulling this well after the fact, I'd tell my agent to walk away.

PS. Don't forget to buy a brick for your loved ones this holiday season!

Like I said before, I am not his biggest fan, but I think he is more than capable of giving us 190 innings of 4.50 ball every year, which is fine in the AL East.
I don't think he stinks, but I'm not on board with having to go 3 or 4 years just to get him. He's declining, and most importantly won't be pitching in a weak division in the NL anymore. His numbers benefited greatly from that, and if he comes here, he's not going to be anything more than a number 3 type of pitcher, IMO. For the money and the length that are rumored out there, I'd pass.

^I understand not wanting to go 3+ years for him, I'm in the same boat. It's just that most people are saying he is a lousy pitcher, which is simply not the case

He's not lousy, he's just not worth the money and years they're going to have to lay out for him. He's basically a glass of water. A .500 record for his career. Eats some innings, but pitched in the weaker league all of his career, and in one of the worst divisions in that league. I expect his numbers to rise pretty significantly if he comes over to the AL. He may have some success early, since not all the hitters will be familiar with his stuff, but once they've seen him a few times, he's going to get hit pretty regularly, IMO.

Lets just hope these 'kids' the Sox are banking on pan out. I'd like to see them get a little more creative then just signing every good F/A.
I took a quick look at next years F/A class and wasn't overwhelmed.
