Didn't know that. That does change the equation.

Pretty much. Jones is a better hitter, but Salty plays the more valuable position. It really comes down to need, and Jones fits a need much more than Salty does.

Agreed. Would love to see both headcase Melancon and brittle Bailey shipped out of town.

I want to give Bailey a shot first. The guy has a ton of talent, and at least it wasn't an arm injury last year (thumb, I believe), if that's any consolation. He is going to be a big piece for us this year, whether we are competitive or not- if not we can always move him for some reasonably significant assets at the deadline.

With Hanrahan in tow, I fully expect this team to contend. We have a solid lineup that should produce and a wipeout bullpen. The starters are the real wildcard, but they will be helped a ton by the pen

That's a pretty damn good pen. It's also 8 deep so I could see one of the two being traded. Personally a hang onto both of them since you literally have no idea what to expect from Bard at this point.
They also have Uehara, Breslow and maybe Hill as well.

The bullpen would be great since it allows us to be comfortable with Morales going 5 effective innings each start. Out of a 5 starter, that could be incredibly valuable

The Sox trading Sands must mean they are sold on Napoli not having a serious hip problem. As long as that's true, this is a great trade. If the other 2 players going the other way are Aceves and Melancon, even better! I wonder who the other player is that we are getting. I would also be open to giving Brian Wilson a one year deal, we'll see.

Jesus I completely forgot they signed Uehara already haha. I doubt Hill is back unless he can't find any MLB deals.

Unless they trade someone there's no spot for him in the rotation ATM.

Lester, Buchholz, Dempster, Doubront, Lackey.

THis is a guy the Mets should have went after... He is worth the 7 mil he should win in arbitration IMO.

Really surprised that none of the other 3 guys have leaked yet. The last couple of years, the Red Sox, more so than most teams it seems, have had info about their deals leak way in advance.

Wouldn't be surprised if Lucchino thinks it's an appropriate negotiating tactic. He's a moron.

What's the saying...Rome wasn't built in a day? I still don't think this is a great baseball team, but hopefully the BS is behind us. This team should at least be a .500 team IMO. Gotta start somewhere. What I like is they've been adding pieces on short term deals and haven't traded away any top prospects.

Ibanez signed with the Mariners in the mean time.

Who the **** gave him an MVP vote this year?

That's a joke....that alone should be reason enough to lose your voting privileges.

Which given what the Pirates have available, is why I thought of Garret Jones.

Seriously. Way to make a mockery of the system.

According to multiple industry sources, Melancon is probably in the deal.

One of the worst bullpens in the league last year should be a lot better. Too many deflating blown saves and horrendous middle relief from last year's crop of bums.

edit: I just read it's a SIX player trade, with two coming Boston's way.

Maybe we will get real lucky and get Alex Dickerson.

Aceves is not a closer he was forced into that role but I though they did ok Miller had a good year Atchison was good.

Hanrahan will give roles to everybody witch is the most improtant part of this deal imo.

Best Case
MR LR Mortenson/Hill/Atchison
lefty Breslow Miller
6th Uehara- makes this pen look really deep.
6th Aceves - Not sure if I even want his attitude but if he pitches like his first year
7th Bailey- less presure might be a good thing might be a bad thing
8th Bard ( Biggest question on team hell in baseball)
9th Hanrahan- should get the job done.

IF Aceves and Bard pitch like they can and Bailey stays healthy this is the best Pen in baseball, shorten the game let this line-up get a lead let the starter get through the order twice and set loose the big guns

ala Bard Wagner Pap- if thats what we get this year we will be talking play-offs.(for that we only need three of the five 6-9 guys I listed witch increases the odds a little.)

If chapman stays in the pen, the reds have the best pen in baseball. That said, this could be much improved, especially with a healthy bailey.
